NVIDIA GTX 590 Owners Club - Page 424

Since I'm getting like 2-3 PM's/Day about this -- I'm going to answer as much as I can.

I'm not getting the 690 because I feel, burned...For me, this is personal...And it's mostly personal because of things I can't really mention here but, the 590 wasn't what was promised...To anyone.

For ME, from a business standpoint and from a vendor standpoint the 590 was an incredible success...Stock sold out, the cores were indeed cherry picked and every component on the card was top dollar...I mean, as a former vendor, limited editions are always the prized pony and the 590 made vendors LOTS and LOTS of money, especially considering cost...Incredible success.

From an enthusiast standpoint, they didn't deliver what they promised. There's no well; they sort of did for me...We were all "burned" in one way or another by this card...Also, there was no mention, anywhere of the updates for the 680 WHQL drivers, no foresight, no maybe bla bla bla, nothing...There was no communication that anything was changing...And I'm actually higher on the totem pole than I was before...Not even a whisper.

That's great for you guys, it really is...Many of the things we've "QQ'd" about all year finally happen...It's awesome, actually...But, read my previous posts...Every single thing they've said says they support this card 100%, it's the best thing since sliced bread but, we're really the ginger step child...Let's be real about that.

That being said, I'm still not dismissing the 690, I'm going to stock the card, it won't be as limited (not to the extent the 590 was) and I'm going to offer it to customers...But, as a personal user, I'm on the fence...Do I spend 1200$ to watercool the card and pray all year like I did with the 590? Do I spend 3 weeks trying to write my own drivers in the hopes the card will be what it can be, again?

I had the highest overclock on water...1.01v, 850mhz ~ I remember it like it was yesterday...That to me, is what I'll remember when I think about this card because prior to the OCP and driver lock-downs, that was it's moment of glory.

You release a card, stand by it stubbornly as the community points out it's flaws...They make custom drivers to bypass these flaws...They actually still support the card...And you wait a fiscal year (11.2 months) to implement everything without a word...While it took the custom driver folks, a week to write the driver and release it on Guru...That just burns me, incredibly.

As a single slot solution, you still can't be the dual PCB cards...

In terms of the 680 = 590, with driver updates, it will happen...I can OC 1 680 about 10% past my 590 in terms of overall performance...Realistically right now, they're the same price, as well.

Let's be honest, though ~ This year, especially if you're a gamer -- There's nothing REAL and groundbreaking coming until Sept/Oct/Nov. ~ GW2 is an amazing game...D3 is an amazing game but, they're all based on the DX9 ported over to a DX11 engine...Meaning, they're just not that taxing...So with your single 590, you're still in the game, performance is still there, you're missing NOTHING by not upgrading this round.

I don't want to hold any of you back from upgrading...The 690 will be a good card...I personally, just don't have faith, as a user, that they're going to follow through...Maybe I'll do the 790, eventually but, for now, tri-sli 680's is my happy place.

Masked thank you for a well explained argument about whether upgrading to 690 or not.

I will probably pass it as well as my 590 is handling games in 2D perfectly well.

I will be traveling to USA in June and i MIGHT sell my 590 for around 600 US dollars here and grab a 690 there but I doubt I will do that. It all depends on wifes shopping over there :)

Btw my fan is hitting 89 degrees on one core because the whether is getting hot here in Turkey. My custom fan is at 85% when this happens.

Should I be worried? or is 89 degrees still accapteble for this card on stock air cooling?

I would say up to 90 is ok..... technically they can go to 100 or so without problems.... but stability starts getting flaky around 85+

Just use MSI Afterburner and set a slightly more aggressive fan profile curve.....

actually i Turned on lots of feature in Nvidia Control Panel and this might be the reason for higher temps. Also the latest drivers 3xx ones are running hotter for me. It could very well be driverl related too

but i will be having a more aggresive fan profile right now.

Last but not least I have 1 140mm fan on the side panel. I can have upto 4 there. I am thinking of placing that 1 i have to another place and see if it helps.

Masked,

Are those drivers you referred to on Guru3D worth downloading? I can't find them. I won't bother if they're not worth it.

As for the 690's, the only thing that has me potentially wanting them over my 590's is because of the extra VRam. In case I wanted to get into 3D Surround gaming at 2560, or 3D stereo gaming on a surround setup. But the 690 only has 2gb of VRam per GPU vs. the 590's 1.5gb per GPU.

Is that extra half a gig per GPU worth it? Performance wise or cost wise? Maybe I'm trying to justify not upgrading, but I'm leaning towards No. Especially if you're on a single monitor. I bought a second 590 and went SLI so I could play BF3 in 3D full blast and stay @ 60fps constant. And it essentially does that just fine. TBH, I haven't played the game in months due to getting sucked into SWTOR, but every game I've run looking to play @ 120fps on a 120hz display has been meeting or exceeding those FPS no problem. Save Metro 2033 in some spots, but it avgs 100fps. So in terms of clock speeds, I'm not feeling the need to upgrade. Heck, I was getting in excess of 500fps on ME 3.

So my concern is if 2gb of VRam per GPU on the 690 still might be short for 3 monitor gaming at 2560x1600 at full blast, and thus a pointless upgrade. Or will it be enough, and worth considering? Thoughts on this?

Is the upgrade from the 590 to a 690 worth it for the VRAM difference? Will that difference be enough to achieve 120fps on a 3D surround setup at high resolutions?

Or wait for the round 2 on the 680's?

Masked, can you comment on whether or not they're might be a round 2 on the 690's?

For myself, I admit, I'm just being a Hardware junkie and caught up in the cycle. As it seems pretty pointless to upgrade if I'm staying on one monitor and not going to a 3 monitor surround setup. Which as far as I know, I'm not. Seeing as I don't have the room for it, and have yet to come up with a MacGyver solution.

I still wouldn't mind some clarification on this if anyone has any. I trust reviews on Thursday will also shed some more light.

I also like the LED's on the 590 better than the 690 and is another reason why I'm probably going to stay where I'm at.

@ Shinobi Jedi

we are on the same boat. The only reason to upgrade for 690 for the 3D purposes. I LOVE 3D but darn technology have so many issues. There are only few titles out there that have 0 issues in 3D but most of the games I have issues that bother you so much in 3D and thats why I am giving it up for the moment. So a 690 for a single monitor might be a overkill. I cant get 120 fps constant on BF3 with a 590 on everything ULTRA but its ok. I get around 90 so I can still take advantage of my 120 hz screen.

I am skipping 6xx series and this seems to be my final answer. Masked had seen this coming and told few of us to hang on to our 590s which I will be doing.

I've edited my last post because conflicting information is coming down the pipeline...So, at this point, who knows. (In regards to my edit)

I actually can't find it anymore :/ ~ I shot off an email but, I don't have an answer.

I can't answer any performance based questions about the card...
@ Masked.

The 590 was a big letdown. However, it was marked at the 700USD price. It was essentially the price of 570 SLI, which was exactly as how they performed.

The 690 is 1000USD, and is said to be 90-100% of 680 SLI.

Wouldn't the 590 be justified if considering the price alone?

I like to think of the situation as such. I'm pissed that I can't clock to 800+ on the card, but it performs at it's price range. If it did clock to 800+ with the 'famed' voltage tweak... it would have been a marvel, and no one would have opened their mouths against the 590.
