Hey guys quick question if I may...

Had to rma my asus 590 a few weeks. Long story short asus can't repair or replace it so the supplier is offering me a LN50000 GB EVGA GTX 680 +Backplate instead.

Worthy compromise?

Cheers

-the 590 performs slightly better
-the 680 can't raise its voltage (worse issue than the 590 had)
-the 680 won't have sli issues

-you could buy a second 680 and get double the performance!

Friends, I've been having the upgrade itch. My problem though is that my 590, overclocked to where it is, is a difficult card to make a substantial upgrade to for $1000. I'd hop on a 690 except they crippled it with a low 2GB vram and limited OC headroom. The OC headroom can partially be fixed with BIOS mods but then you still have nvidia's stupid boost clocks; which from everything I've read are absolutely maddening. It performs very well at 1080p, but I run 1440p. The 1440p is also what's giving me a little bit pf heart pangs with the 590. I haven't seen any vram issues (things are still buttery smooth) but I know they're there.

SO, 1440p... what about Titan? Well, I want to keep a single PCB since I water cool, and a single Titan is incredibly underwhelming. Most of the Titan OCs in Karlitos' Heaven thread are around 72-76fps. WIth my 590 at 740MHz, I pulled 61.9fps. 10-14fps gain at 1080p for $1000? That's hilarious. The gain is even less when you consider my OC is now 850MHz.

So that leaves me in the 7990 camp. Power draw would be about the same if not a bit less than my 590 and dual 7970s consistently outperform GK104 offerings. It's got a lot of VRAM too and a wider memory bus than GK104. If AMD releases their Malta 7990 it should outperform existing 7990 releases due to a higher base clock and be more on par with CFX GHZ 7970s when both are OC'ed. But then I'd be firmly in the red camp, and I don't know how I feel about that.

Of course, this is all assuming that any cards released later this year would be GK114 based which would be a disappointment. Maxwell would be the arch I'd be shooting for, but in reality that won't see consumer hands until April-July 2014.

The GPU market really kind of sucks right now.

Didn't realise the 680 voltages were locked.. How well do they overclock?

Well I've decided to go for it. I think a 4gb backplated 680 is a pretty good deal I can always go sli as you mentioned.

Was tempted by a 690 but I'm guessing two 4GB 680s will be noticeably quicker..

I don't have one, but from what I have read.... not too great compared to how good overclocking was on the 580's.

They still beat 580's in benches though. 580's get similar results to 660's.
