Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB vs Western Digital 2TB Black

Hello.

I am on my way to building a new computer soon, but I am not sure which HDD to go for. I have been looking at the Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB and the Western Digital 2TB Black (as the title says). I will probably have one of these connected to the Gigabyte P67 UD7-B3 motherboard. This board has 2 x 6 GB/s ports, but is there any performance gain going from 3 GB/s to 6 GB/s with HDDs? (One of the SATAIII slots will most likely be connected to a OCZ Vertex 3).

Anyways, what would be my best bet?

Kind regards

this was taken from this website

i personally would go with WD, even before these results, i have never used anything different.

good luck!

edit: also, i see no reason for going sata III, sata II will provide a max of 32mb buffer, III will give 64mb buffer, but since you will have a vertex 2, you won't use 64mb buffer on your 2tb drive. the extra bandwidth isn't used as much as you would think, i have never seen bandwidth use on any of my computers go above 30mbps (or is is mb/s?) and even that was with 2 similar computers using an ethernet crossover cable both using 500gb wd black drives

edit2: hm, this particular drive has 64mb buffer, interesting.. here is the cheapest reputable seller i could find of the re4 2tb. however the caviar black 2tb is quite a lot cheaper

Yes, and with lowest failure rates among drive manufacturers.

3. Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3TB 7200RPM Sata/600 64MB ~ £194/$312
4. Western Digital RE4-GP 2TB 7200RPM Sata2 64MB ~ £213/$342
5. Western Digital RE4 2TB 7200RPM Sata2 64MB ~ £232/$372
6. Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 2TB 7200RPM Sata/300 32MB ~ £236/$378
7. Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 3TB 7200RPM Sata/600 64MB ~ £356/$571

it is very fast, cheaper, and will last a long time. plus since its a black, it will have a 5 year warranty. that is your best bet in my opinion.

You might want to give this recent report a good read.

There was also a discussion here.

Longer warranties, calling it Black series doesn't make a hdd reliable. It's all marketing and people buy right into it. Again, just another case of people believing everything they are fed, no questions asked.

So Azo, from my options, would you recommend going for the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3TB 7200RPM Sata/600 64MB over the Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 7200RPM Sata/600 64MB seeing the price difference?

Read your links, and from what I can see WD and Hitachi are the most reliable HDDs.

Also saw they stated something like "Hitachi 3TB might be too big for quite a few OS's", guess this would not be an issue with Win7 64-bit? They also have the Ultrastar 1TB and Dekstar 2TB which are a bit cheaper (but was mainly looking at a 2TB).
