Antivirus testing - Page 5

This is a great thread. Ijust got a brand new PC. Details in my sig. I downloaded the free 30 day version of NOD32 thinking it was great since Leo Laporte says it is but it appears that it is not that good compared toe MSE.

I have MSE on my work computer and it does ok but I just got a bad trojan last friday that popped up with the fake Windows restore scan saying all these things were wrong and I couldnt cancel the scan or even close the window.

It caused various icons on my desktop to be hidden and also my programs were gon in the start menu. Everything else seemed to work including the internet. I had a similar one before that disabled everything right after the PC finsihed booting and the desktop was up. For this current one I ran Malware and it got rid of 3 trojans but I then I had to go into the registry and delete the various entry's that caused other issues and then even go into every folder and make things visible again since it checked the boxes to hid various programs and folders.

This new rig I got is expensive and I dont want to risk it, so would NOD32 be a good one to stick with or just go with MSE or? Norton has always let me down in the past and caused way too many issues with it not letting other programs run thinking they were bad. I am going to be super careful when it comes to internet surfing as well.

Norton is one of the worst IMO, it has caused more issues with clients computers not being able to connect to the internet than anything I have seen. IMO for what it does, its too 'bulky' and doesnt play the nicest with other programs.

Totally agree with you. But what is a solid AV then? Also I see you use an Asus 248 monitor. I was thinking of getting the Asus MS246H since it appears to have the lowest input lag of any other. Thoughts?

I use MSE, as my instructor tested it when it first came out and found it to very good. Along with an occasional scan with Malwarebytes, I seems to have a clean system.

As far as the monitor.. I have nothing but good things to say of my 248's
I am unfamiliar with the 246's but Asus has treated me well, and I bought 6 of the 248's when I did them (4 for my setup and 2 for my wife) and all 6 were perfect.. no dead pixels or anything.

So are you a pretty serious gamer or do you do video or graphics work? I need a monitor that will be a solid gaming monitor with good color. Whats the point of fast response times if the game looks awful?

My biggest issue with Norton's is that removing certain components of their software causes all sorts of issues (especially with web browsers). This is in my experience, of course. I can't speak for anyone else but although their client is now a good chunk more light weight and the protection is much better, they are still an intrusive software.

BTW, thanks again for all the work you put into this.

A couple more for the must try list. ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. Curious about this one because I got rootkitted while it was running. If you dl ZoneAlarm, you should get the option of beta testing this one free.

In addition to the Malwarebytes/SuperAntiSpyware/Rkill repertoire. I'd like to submit Gmer which is a great Rootkit detection program I've been using for years. It's a revised release of the old Rootkit Revealer that M$ never updated to work past XP. With one caveat, he built Process Explorer into it. That's my real goto guy in times of big trouble.
