Av-comparatives.org did this with hundreds of thousands of malware samples where Gdata, Avira, Panda and trustport were the top ones. Avast got a advance plus rating aswell and was one of the few free versions.
MSE received a advance rating due to its slow scanning engine and its inability to pick up script malware. That's why we see so many rogue malware programs running loose people think mse is the best free solution out there cos it doesn't give any problems running with other apps.
Well its a poor av. Avg received a tested rating and finished 15 out of 20 avs tested with mse 14th. Gdata finished first with a detection rate of 99,6 and Avira 99,3 Panda 99,2 and Trustport 99,1. Kaspersky finished 12th 97,1 and Symnatec 7th 98,6.
Avast free solution finished 11th above kaspersky. Eset finished 9th 97,7

False positives Panda, Mcafee had huge number off and should be avoided. Scan speed. Symnatec 1st, Avira, Panda, avast, sophos, avg

A total of 1,224732 malware samples know and unknown were thrown at the avs.
Script malware avast detected 95 percent, Avira 91, avg 60 ,mse, 77,2 kaspersky 90, Gdata 99,7 nod 82,9 and Symnatec 89,2

Yes, two sources that are worth checking whenever you are considering a change in malware protection are av-comparatives and virusbulletin.
Both conduct detailed tests of many malware protection programs several times per year. Unfortunately, to get all the details of the virusbulletin analyses, you need to have a subscription, which at US$175+/yr is probably out of the reach of most readers here. But you can get the virusbulletin summary results for free.

One of the things you will immediately see when you take a look at the av-comparatives results is that there are many different factors to take into consideration when judging the effectiveness of programs, such as
  • detection of known malware
  • removal of known malware
  • detection/blocking of previously-unknown malware
  • effect on system performing various tasks (eg copying, downloading, unzipping, transcoding files)
  • false-positives detection rate
Then there is the consideration of how the programs compare on various systems. VB actually goes through the bother of testing using say win xp vs win 7. (The most recent av-comparatives just uses win 7 32-bit, I think.)

At any rate, I think the latest results (13 april) from av-comparatives are a little different from what spoony posted above, so worth another look.

Comodo hasn't had a very good track record with VirusBulletin's tests, such as here and here.

i'd say prevention is better than dectection when its comes to anti virus programs

I have been using GDATA for 2.2 years it has worked fine so far. Apart from 2 years ago, when I tried to install a downloaded FSX plane with auto installer, and I had to reinstall windows. Don't know anything about removing viruses. It is mostly for people like me that wont be bothered to much and it has become relatively cheap though download. Commodo is to complicated for me. GDATA is a bit slow though but I don't care.
