First build need help on Graphics selection

This is going to be my build so far....

Corsair Graphite Series 600T Case
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz CPU
ASUS P8P67 DELUXE Motherboard
Corsair Hydro H70 CPU Cooler
Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB 10000 RPM Hard Drive
G.SKILL Ripjaws X + Turbulence II Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) Memory
Corsair Professional Series AX1200 1200W Power Supply
LITE-ON 12X Blu-Ray Burner
ASUS VE278Q Black 27" 1920x1080 2ms Full HD HDMI LED Backlight Monitor
Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Now what I am not sure about is the graphics cards. I am not sure wether to go with Nvidia or AMD, nor am I sure which card to get depending on which way I go. I want to be able to play all my PC games without a hitch on the highest settings I can get, and I want to be able to someday do some video editing. So any help that all of you could give to me would be greatly appreciated.

With those parts, looks like you have deep pockets. Get a Radeon 6990 or GTX 590 They both go toe to toe and depends on specific games which will determine which one edges the other slightly.

What games will you being playing the most?

Video Editing is mostly CPU dependant.

Edit:
So what's the story with the Rig in your sig and this new one being your first build?

It all depends on your budget for your GPU...it seems you are going for some real highend equipment... I do have a suggestion mind you...If you are doing some video editing it would take some HDD space...Rather than getting that raptor...get a SSD to put your OS on and pick up a couple of samsung spinpoints 1TB version to put your games and video editing files on...The samsungs are pretty snappy performers and with the SSD running your OS your system should run awfully quick...

Now for GPUs....I am a more Bang for the buck type... I currently have a 6950 with unlocked shaders OCed to 840mhz on core...I just ordered another reference 6950 to do the same in crossfire... For the price of a 580 I will have performance that will smash it...Also choose this GPU for its value and higher VRAM...I am running a eyefinity setup where the extra VRAM is useful...

Just some food for thought, for you to chew on a bit...

As far as the sig goes that was what I was going to build when I first joined but I could never get the money together. Now I am doing better so I will be able to buy all the parts just not all at ounce. I guess I should change my sig lol.

As for games I play a little of everything on PC. I play RPG's like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Mass Effect 1 and 2, point and click adventure games, FPS games like BioShock series, Crysis series, Half-Life series, Prey, Action games like GTA IV, and so forth. There are a lot of games that I don't have yet that I want to play like Metro 2033 and Homefront.

Updated my sig. And if you look at my name I log in with that will tell you how long ago I joined, since I am 39 now. My sig did really need updating so thanks for pointing that out.

Go like a crossfire HD 6970 i think, it will cost the same as one of the new cards eg 6990 and gtx 590 but it will out perform them.

Also im keen to hear what people say about sound card cause im looking for one myself, nice rig btw similar to mine in a few ways.

That is actually something that I have considered. But what worries me is the fact that I keep hearing that there are driver issues with some games no matter if you choose CrossFireX or SLI. I have used AMD cards for years now and the only problems I have had were with the 10.x drivers they were absolutely horrible. After that they were fine, but then my computer died. The only things that survived were my HDD and my AMD 4890 Turbo card. Everything else dead as a door nail, hence the new build.

As far as sound goes I usually just stick with what is on the mobo as the onboard sound has grown by leaps and bounds over the years in terms of quality.

Please forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by cans, what are they?

By the way I am either going with this in CrossFireX

Or this in SLI
