955 Black + M4A79XTD EVO + 1600MHz

Thread Starter
I was finally set on my build until I've come across many reviews where people are having problems with this combination:

Phenom II X4 955 Black
Asus M4A79XTD EVO (790X)
DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800) RAM

Apparently the CPU (955 Black C2) with that mobo cannot support the RAM?

However, all those posts were from about a year ago, so has the problem been fixed by Asus/AMD BIOS updates?

If you have 2 DIMMs you should be able to run 1600Mhz with maybe increased DRAM voltage... 4 DIMMs it's just not possible though
post #3 of 15
Should be fine if you are only using 2 sticks.

If you are using 4, you would need to balance a cup of water on your head, while standing on one foot, singing an ancient egyptian hymn, and hope that the stars are aligned in the proper configuration. Even then, it may not work.

Or you could just run 1333MHz, and call it a day.

Unless you already own the C2 stepping CPU, a new one will be C3 stepping and should be able to run the RAm @ 1600MHz. That being said, sometimes it takes a little bit of work in the BIOS to get the RAM to run at stated speeds. I could almost get my G.Skill RAM to 1600 on my old 770 board (1544MHz) on a C2 stepped 550.

YMMV

I just may need to... I'll try the standing foot thing though

The product description says C2....I have idea how to deal with BIOS since this is my first ever build and I've been using laptops all my life

If you need to run 1333Mhz, that RAM kit should be able to lower to 7-7-7 at 1333 which'll just about equal 1600Mhz performance

That one is 1333MHz @ 7-7-7-21 ... but review is not as good as the 1600MHz one from newegg

Just get the 1600Mhz kit, it's cheaper and will run the same 1333 CL7 settings if you need to

So it won't crash like all the reviews I read? (compatibility issue with C2 955)

If that's the case then I guess I got nothing to lose.
