[Solved] Erratic Frame Rates...At Wits End

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm pretty new here. Anyway, I’ve been having a frame rate problem in all my games. It just started a few weeks ago. When I’m in a game, my frame rates will start to become erratic. For example, I’ll be playing then all of a sudden the frame rate will go from say 100 down to 60, back up to 100 then back down to 60, continuously, even if I look at something simple like the sky or the ground. It’ll keep going up and down and won’t stop. It doesn’t happen every time I play a game, but happens very often. I monitor my GPU temp in game with EVGA Precision and the temp never goes past 85°C in the games I play. I’m playing Crysis 2 now, and the temps never exceed 73°C (so far). The thermal threshold for my GTX 280 is 105°C. The temps for my CPU, RAM, NB, SB, etc. are all fine too. My hardware hasn’t changed nor have any overclocks. I’ve had my system overclocked for years at the settings they’re at now and never had a problem. I made sure the overclocks were stable and that the temps were safe. I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and have tried reformatting two times, but I still get the strange dips. The drivers haven’t changed since the problem started either. I’ve been using the same versions for a while now (no new updates have been released because my hardware is a bit dated). My mobo’s BIOS is up-to-date as well. I use compressed air on all of my components regularly too.

I’m ready to throw my PC out the window because when the dips happen they’re very distracting. I’m at a loss. I’ve also tried reseating the GPU and reconnecting the 12v rail wires, and everything else I can think of and nothing works. Like I mentioned, it seems like this happens at random too. One day I won’t get the problem, and another I will. Comes and goes. It’s really starting to piss me off As I write this FurMark is running in the background at max. It's been running for nearly 45m now and I've not experienced any dipping.

Anyway, I hope you guys can help

Here's a screenshot of the GPU usage when I get the dips. The giant dip was caused from alt+tabbing to take the screenshot. Went back up once I entered the game again.

It could just be the game or the HDD loading textures. Does it do this on other games?

It seems to do it in every 3D accelerated game. I'm positive it's not due to texture loading. When my machine is behaving, I hardly get any texture loading hiccups in Crysis 1 even with everything set to Very High. The thing is, once the dips happen, they don't stop. In Crysis 2 I left my character staring at a basic floor for 15m and it was still going up and down. Quake Live even does it sometimes...so I highly doubt it's a texture loading issue. As I mentioned before, this just happened a few weeks ago out of the blue. Haven't had any hardware changes.

Hmmm this is very odd. Sadly I have nothing more to contribute seeing how I have the faintest idea what could be happening but the least I can do is bump your thread

Good luck.

I'm having sort of the same issue as you. I have a GTX260M 1GB on my laptop. Any of my first person shooters besides stalker have moments where the framerate suddenly just drops. I also have reformatted and installed drivers multiple times. I have yet to try older drivers yet to see if the issue continues...

Edit: what nvidia drivers are you using?

I'm using 266.58. This problem is REALLY annoying. It even happens in STALKER. It'll all of a sudden go from a steady 78 down to 40 then back up to 78 then down to 40, and it will keep going up and down no matter where I go in the game or what I look at. As for your problem, you might try reinstalling the drivers and using compressed air

Hello mate, it could be something is running in the background that it's causing the game to slow down at times.

Could you please run HiJackThis and post the log so I could take a look at it?

I only clicked on this thread because I thought it said erotic frame rates and I was curious

Only thing I can think of is either thermal throttling (which doesn't look at all likely with those temps) or the card isn't happy with the power it's being supplied (also not likely looking at your psu)

GRRR I was just playing Crysis 2, and after about 2 1/2hrs the dipping started. I was monitoring the temp for my GPU and it never went passed 73°C. Idk, the problem JUST started recently. I've had the same hardware and (safe and stable) overclocks for years...

Here's my HijackThis Log:
