Thanks. I'll take a look at the guide. I flashed my GTX 280's BIOS with the present overclock so could it still randomly downclock?

I followed the guide but I'm still getting the erratic frame rates

I had that problem with my GTX 260, especially when it went past 70c.
I also had a similar problem when one of my HDDs were dying.

EDIT: problem was never fixed, I sold my gtx 260 to buy a HD 5770.

I tried my 8800 GTS 640 and I didn't get the problem...but now I've run into another problem. While I was testing the 8800, I took apart my GTX 280 to check if there was any giant dust bunnies living in between the radiator fins, but accidently snapped one of fan wires near the base of the connector. I wonder if I should invest in another video card (8800 sucks now) or buy an aftermarket GPU cooler... I'm on a pretty tight budget too. What do you guys think?

you could do this if your stock cooler is big enough..

simply add a 120mm cooler and connect to mobo or fan controller..

Nice.

A friend of mine asked me to fix his computer, so he agreed to give me the money needed to buy an Accelero XTREME GTX Pro.

Btw, what temps do you get with that fix?

this is a 9600gt and with the fan at about 60% i got about seventy plus some degrees more at load..sry i forgot the exact value.. maybe 80 was max which is still good because it aint even 75% fan speed and it aint a slipstream / good fan..
on a longer card you can add maybe 2 fans running 60% which makes it very silent and effective.. this idea motivated me to change all fans in my PSU´s and put new ones in which are connected to a fan controller to keep my rigs silent.

I say to invest into getting a GTX 460 at the very least.

I would say a 560TI if you're going to invest and you don't have an uber budget.
