Which Smart Phone Can I use in Japan -> USA?

Thread Starter
So right now I am in the US Military stationed in Japan. The carriers over here are Softbank, AU by KDDI and DOCOMO.

I am in the market for a new phone, but I am leaving Japan before the end of the year. I really dont want to buy a 400$ phone just to have to get a new $400 phone when I go back to the US in December.

Does anyone know which Smart phone I can do this with? I heard the iPhone wont work unless its been Jailbroken, but then I still might run into problems. Have no idea about any HTC or Samsung phones.

Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure Japan has nation-wide GSM now. CDMA is a dying band. I would assume any GSM phone will work, not withstanding a jailbreak or something I don't know you have to mod.

No, really?

Perhaps you missed the fact that they're implementing GSM as we speak. I didn't say dead. I said dying. There's a difference.

Ok I was not aware of that... Well hell it's not like we are going to see this anytime this decade.

Only until they completely roll out LTE. Then CDMA goes the way of the dodo; everything, including voice, will be on LTE.

OP, I suggest NOT buying a smartphone in Japan at all if you are coming back to the US that soon. The handset will be completely useless. The reason for this is that while Japanese phones use the same technologies, they are on completely different frequencies, and/or they are SIM locked.

In your case I would just buy some cheap dumb phone and live with it for a few months until you get back stateside.
