1 or 2 cards better for dual monitors?

I read a post on here that said it will be much easier on the main card while gaming i.e. heat if a second card runs the extra monitor.

It came up when someone said they use their second monitor to browse, i.m., etc. while gaming.

I do the same thing sometimes, right now both monitors run off of the 560 via dvi. I have a gt 240 that I could throw in there to run the second monitor.

So is it worth it or is it fine off one card. I know my card can handle it, but I figure it would have more resources for the game. I guess I should do a couple benchmarks with the second monitor on and off.

I have a 570 and it was running both of my monitors. It made it run much hotter because it never downclocked to 2D clocks. I put my old 9800GT back in for my 2nd monitor and now my 570 stays much happier. At idles my temps went from roughly 30c to 45c and loads went from 58c to 65c.

If the 2 displays are the same resolution, the heat problem is much less. I run 3 1280x1024 displays from a pair of GTX460s, no heat troubles here. If the displays aren't the same resolution, then a second card is a fine idea. If it's just for web browsing, a low spec card is all you need, a GT210 or 220 will do that job just fine, or a 4350 if you want an ATi card. The 240 you have spare will be perfect.

i currently put my second monitor on my gtx465 rather then my 470's, overall temps seem much lower then when i had them on my sli. I use the second for web stream video and web browsing. But as said before if you have 2 different res it prob would be useful to have the second card

My monitors are both 1080p. Temps aren't really an issue with this card. Just thought I'd ask as its something I heard.

Today either AMD 6000 series can run three monitors and Nvidia 500 series two monitors per card without heat issues as of cards of yore. The 1080p monitors don't require more than the 1GB - 1.5GB Vram on normal cards offer. It's not until you hit higher reslutions that it matters. Cards have taken a step forward this last series from both companies.

Unless you're using the second monitor to run another graphics-intensive app (like, say, playing Crysis 2 while you play Crysis), I doubt you will need to run it off of another card. Like Arizonian said, the new 6000 and 500 series cards are leaps and bounds ahead of their predecessors. I ran an Eyefinity setup with three monitors off of my 6850 and heat was not an issue with a well ventilated case. I'm willing to bet that your 560 should stack up the same way, if not better.

By all means, go ahead and slap in that 240 if you want, but your 560 will do just fine.

I went from 34c-45c to 35-47c with dual monitors... So one card is just fine.

I am run starcraft 2 and fallout NV at the same time.

Also depends on monitor refresh rate...with some tweaking intentional and unintentional-i took my Eyefinity from 60hz refresh to 75hz refresh...the difference being about 5C on each temp sensor at idle.
