is it possible to rename your graphics card? like change the name from GeForce 470 to GeForce 480 that programs can read?

I don't think so, or not easily anyways. There might be some config files in places you can mess with. But it's kind of a weird thing to do. Are you trying to one-up some of your friends or something?

I remember browing the registry and I found a key string that specifies the GPU name. It's probably different for Nvidia drivers though.

EDIT: Found it...
Look at the string for "Device Description" and "DriverDesc"

Doesn't changing the name mess up installations of drivers that require a specific model number? Or is the name change purely cosmetic?
