GTX 580 sli vs GTX 590

Thread Starter
What's the performance difference between the 2? I have a GTX 580 right now and am either going to sell it and pick up th4e GTX 590 for some more $ or just pick up another GTX 580 and have more performance

My main question is which way is the better bang for the buck?

I could probably sell my GTX 580 for $400ish and use that money down on a GTX 590. Or, just spend $500 and pick up another GTX 580

So yah, which way is better bang for the buck?

Well I think that sli with 580's is slightly stronger due to the 590 having lower clocks but best bang for your buck I might say 590 although I'd personally go ahead and get the 580 sli.
I'd go with the 580 SLI personally. You'll get a better OC with lower temps.

Here's one in the for sale section for $415 shipped.

http://www.overclock.net/video/97456...5-shipped.html

$814 (selling yours plus second card) for SLI vs $750 for the 590. It's no contest for me.

I think it depends on whether you're watercooling. If not I'd say 580 SLI unless you can't afford it. If you are wter cooling, the 590 will only need one block, and may overclock as well as a 580 once it's under water and once the OCP problems have been fixed. Personally though if you go the 590 route I would wait a little while to see if someone comes out with a board with improved VRM's and disabled OCP.

What resolution are you playing at though because 580 SLI may be overkill anyway.

I'm in the same "boat". Trying to decide if I'd rather Sell 580 and get 590 or SLI the 580. Assuming you can sell 580 for $400ish options are:

a. $300 "extra" for 590 GTX
b. $500(400 used) "extra" for 580

My thoughts:
-b. costs more, but you get more performance and avoid hassle of selling card
-a. Saves money - but more hassle less performance
- is the performance difference something that would even be noticeable? (running 120fps instead of 100fps isn't going to matter much)

Best bang for buck for me is easy (as I would not be comfortable running 580SLI on my psu) - but for you, it's more of a tossup IMO. If I was in your boat (and didn't need a better PSU), I'd probably get an extra 580 to avoid hassle of selling and be more "future proofed"

Well,

I don't need the performance at all. 1 GTX 580 is way more than I really need -- But this is a hobby and I enjoy having the shear performance (unused). I am under water, but have no intention to WC my GPU's (I've just never wanted to)

So, like you said -- It's a toss up of which is the better buy. Remember, I could always just sell the 580 and pick up a 590 and get more performance, is it 300$ more performance? or is $200 more for 2 580's worth it?

In that case the "worth" is personally subjective and up to you! If performance of both is "acceptable", you have to ask yourself if the extra unused performance "worth" $200 or would you rather spend that money on something else.

In situations like these I look at benchmarks and try to gauge the differences in price / % for FPS increase and see if I like what I come up with. JC2 and a couple other games stutter a bit on my single 580gtx on certain parts. (for most people it would be an inconsequential amount but as I said before, I'm needy(picky?)) Looking at differences in benchmarks comparing the two, the extra horsepower should put me back in happy FPS territory.

(For me, I am NOT happy with single 580gtx performance, but think 590 would be fine for a long time. I'd also want to upgrade my PSU for 580SLI, so it'll probably be better / easier to sell 580, and get 590 versus getting another 580, a better PSU and having an extra old PSU - so 590 is looking to be better for the money at this point!

590 isn't really all that impressive. Couple that with the fact that they're popping off smoke right now for unconfirmed reasons and they're really not the best buy you can get.

My gtx 470's overclocked are faster than a single 590 and they cost about half as much. I would grab the two gtx 580's simply because they're the same thing only better.

Currently, the 590 is not the way to go.
Card and driver issues all over the place.

Best, is wait a couple more weeks, and see what happens than. If the drivers make the cards stable, or if OCing them goes better and performance go up.

If you need to buy right this minute, got with 580 SLI. Its better, mature drivers, and will give better performance.
