I think 1A/12W per header is standard so you should just be OK. Some newer boards allow 2A.

also the pump draws .7 amps

I thought fan headers on mobos only put out 5v-8v? Thats why you use thise 3 pin to 4 molex connectors to get a full 12v.

on older per socket 7 boards ya and sum socket 7 boards too
but all new ones put out 12v

I view this as a generally poor practice. The advantages must really be major for me to want to power my pump off a mobo connection. I would look long and hard for another way before I said that "this is my only choice".

I wouldn't do it unless you can find out how much your motherboard can take or unless you have a PWM pump like the 35X that just uses the PWM signal and draws power from a molex.

While smaller pumps may be fine, many draw as much as 30 watts, some upward of 48 watts depending on the pump.

I could see using the smaller pumps, but I wouldn't generally suggest it.


Instead, I would suggest something like the sunbeam rheosmart if you want to control via PWM. It can take the PWM signal and convert it to analog voltage control of fans and pumps up to 30 watts per channel. If you burn out a sunbeam, no biggie, but I doubt you will with the large heatsinks that it uses.

Martin - what benefit does one get form connecting a pump to something PWM controlled? Curious as I was under the impression that just letting the pump run full bore all the time was just fine. What is it you gain from having the rpm on the pump slowing down?

don't see why pumps don't come shipped this way
I see no reason why it couldn't work. I've changed every pump I've owned to a three pin connector. However, the wattage is way higher on a pump than a fan. Like 2 watts vs 20. Try it, if it doesn't work, just use a molex to three pin.

Just quieter, and why run something full speed when there's no need. You'll just burn out the electronics quicker. Though I'm not sure that's a valid argument, because are electronics burning out from the second you start using them? interested in that...
