Black screen (no backlight) after waking up from Sleep mode

This has been going on for quite some time now. My girl has an ASUS K50AB notebook and has it set to sleep when she closes the lid. However, about 40% of the time when attempting to resume Windows from Sleep mode, the backlight does not come on. You can barely see the screen contents (if under good light). The mouse still works, the keyboard still works and I can login to it and do whatever I'd like as usual, but as I said-- with no backlight. Restarting the notebook fixes the problem.

She's running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. Here is a list of what I've tried thus far:

Installing a few "hotfixes" from Microsoft relating to all black screen issues.
Installing the latest Windows updates.
Updating GPU driver (ATI Radeon 4570 Mobile)
Flashing to the latest BIOS (Latest rev on ASUS support site. Successfully flashed with the EZ Flash utility in the BIOS)
Tried finding anything related in the BIOS to Power Management or S3 video... But no options were there.
Reformatting the OS.

Things to note:
As said above, the notebook is now reformatted and updated with the latest Windows updates. It did not do any of the black screen errors for a few days, thus I thought that the reformat had actually fixed the issue. However, it started again (should mention that it started the black screens again BEFORE I applied any and all Windows updates).

I'm at my wits end here. I really have no more options in my mind to try. If anyone has any suggestions, my family and I would be more than grateful.
