GTA4 Question...

Hi folks,

I bought GTA4 today after running through Mafia II, which came free with my video card. I'd never played this type of game before Mafia II, and hear that GTA is much more open-ended with options for side quests and free play. Sounds fun!

When I'm setting up the graphics configuration, putting View Distance, Detail Distance, and Vehicle Density to max results in a red message saying that my resource usage is 1008/985, and that I should reduce this to optimize game play. Leaving it set like this and running three passes of the benchmark resulted in an average of 57 fps, 76% cpu usage, 69% system memory usage, and 97% video memory usage. Am I being tricked by the error message, or is usage like that unacceptable?

Playing at 1920x1080 on the sig rig, with the 560ti OC'd to 950/1900/2100.

I was able to play Mafia II with maxed settings, only getting a slowdown once during a huge explosion of fishtanks that sent high detail water everywhere.

Have you played the game at these settings?

If those settings don't lag when you play you should be fine.

Hears my advice

Use the GTA 4 1.04 patch, its the best version trust me bro, patches before and after this one suck, and are either much slower, or missing certain street clutter and other items.

Use a commandline file to add the following commands on startup

-norestrictions

also set you video memory to 1600 mb using this command

-availablevidmem 1.7 ish youll have to experiment with your 1gb card.

This command uses system memory as gpu memory. Even DDR2 is fast enough to pull this off.

Then MAX OUT EVERYTHING, all the sliders, EXCEPT night time shadows or pc shadows or whatever is called, leave that slider empty. Turn on Vsync too, its helps alot in GTA4, otherwise it tear city.
