Except that the Phenom II x4 840 isn't even supported by that motherboard yet... check the support lists people

My internet is slower than dial up. So you'll have to excuse me for not bothering to check more than I needed to.

If that's the case, then the Athlon II will be the ONLY option.

The Athlon II was always the first option to be honest.

Thanks for the help guys.
I have looked at the CPU support list for my motherboard and it lists the 840:

AMDPhenom II X4 8403200MHz512KBx4N/ADeneb45nmC395W4000N/A

They are the same price so I would be inclined to go for the 840.

What about my idea about my board being under warranty? If my board does burn out with a 955 or 1055T then Gigabyte must replace it as it lists it as a supported CPU (oh and I have to hope this happens within three years and not later!).

But! If there is no difference between these chips for the purposes that I use the PC for and all perform at the same speed when doing the multi-tasking that I do then I do not need to bother with the more expensive chips anyway right?... and can save a bit of cash with the Phenom 840 or Athlon 645.

Yes buying a new motherboard which is decent means I have to spend another £70 or so and I don't fancy doing that. Remember that my memory is DDR2 and most decent boards are now DDR3 so that means buying new memory too so that's definitely a no no.

Thanks again.

By the way, there is a big sign on the box of my motherboard stating "supports AMD AM3 Phenom II series" - does that not mean it can take phenom x4s and x6s or is it misleading? It's why I bought it at the time in November 2010, i.e. so I could upgrade later, plus it was the only one that supported DDR2.

You can see the same information on their website too - saying it's ideal for Phenom II!

If you put a Phenom II with L3 cache (quad) into that motherboard, it WILL light the VRM's on fire. It's not a matter of if it will, its only a matter of time. And when it goes out, it has the potential to take your CPU, PSU, RAM, and possibly even your GPU with it (mine took out everything but the GPU and drives).

And good luck getting Gigabyte to send you a working replacement. It took me SEVEN MONTHS to get a resolution from Gigabyte with my board that caught fire (760G, stated 140w support, only had a 3+1 power phase, same EXACT power phase as yours). And I was running an Athlon II x4 630 at bone stock.

Get the Phenom II 840 or an Athlon II x4 645 and run it at stock. That board WILL NOT take anything more than that safely.

Ok thank you. I have decided on the Phenom II x4 840 (Phenom in name only yes but it will make me feel good!) and for my purposes it should give the same performance as a bigger 4 or 6 core. What do mean by run it at stock?

Can someone please help me with the graphics card, I'm going to buy them together. Someone suggested an ATI 5450 on page 1 but there are so many different types it's confusing. Can you just pinpoint one specific model that I can simply buy?

I was looking at getting a Gigabyte one as it's the same company as my board, hoping the PC would run more stable with similar components. The issue is that they seem to be more expensive (I'm looking at 1GB).

So far I have seen:
1) MSI Radeon HD 5450 Low Profile 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Passive Graphics Card : http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...BlclBhZ2U9Jg==

2) Asus ATI Radeon HD 5450 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card: (below it on the same link)

(both same price but the latter has 1600mhz memory but the former has 3yr warranty over 2yrs).

3) XFX ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 DVI HDMI VGA Graphics Card Retail found here: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Se...ics-Cards-ATi/

Or should I spend £10 more for a Gigabyte?

Oh and can my board even support DDR3 graphics??
