I agree with omnius19, Celeras you need to chill out.

To OP, 580's SLI for sure.

Same thing applied to DA2. 39 fps average is a perfectly playable framerate.

As for metro2033, that is a notoriously hard game to run. Using that as a basis for saying that the 580 is not capable of running most modern games is kindof like saying that graphics cards were horrible 4 years ago because they could not run crysis the day it came out.

And lastly, you really need to learn some manners. Ranting and insulting others on the internet belittles yourself and this forum. Lets try to keep a little civility on ocn.
@Crysis: If you feel 30 is playable, I don't know what to say. You're entitled to your opinion, but lol. Minimums of 30 come with noticeable hitching and is completely unacceptable.

@DA2: An average in the 30s is a minimum in the 20s, or even teens. Again, completely unacceptable and will be a stutterfest.

@Metro: Nobody is talking about 'running the game'. Playing on maximum settings is a completely different animal.

And I fail to see where I've been anything less than civil. I disagreed with you and provided sources to back up my statements. You disagreed with me by saying 'thats fine' and telling me to learn to read. Take your own advice.

Well OCN seems to agree with me that framerates in the 30s are playable. This is from a poll taken among ocn members.

As for your civility...

"This is acceptable to you? You're on the wrong forum"

I'm pretty sure that is not civil under any definition. My reading comment was in reference to your blatant mistake regarding my source material. Yours was just an abrasive remark. But I am done with this discussion now. I realize you will keep arguing all night if I stick around but frankly it is a waste of my time and I have better things to do. Have a nice night.

To renaldy: I think that you are making the right choice with sli 580s. They will perform really well for you. Sorry that we clogged up your thread with pointless arguing. I hope your build goes well.

3-way SLI scaling is not bad but actually fairly good for GTX570s. IMHO, the issue does not come with having 3 cards but one must have both a beefy CPU and a high enough resolution (eg 2560x1600). In other words, the deficiency in either will prevent good scaling to happen.

Brute performance wise, GTX570 3-way SLI should win over GTX580 2-way SLI.

However, I believe OP's HAF932 has 7 expansion slots only. Using three GTX570s in Asus Rampage II Extreme , the 3rd GTX570 (sitting in the bottom white slot) will not have a case expansion slot.

Therefore, I suggest GTX580 SLI.

Minimums staying above 30 is perfectly playable. An average of 30 with minimums of teens is not. Huge difference, which the poll doesn't differentiate. Tell ya what, let's make a real poll with details and see what happens

Though I guess it doesn't matter since you're such a busy man, but I'll make the poll anyway. Enjoy the lurk.

Thread up: http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...le-gaming.html

May have it moved to gaming cos I wasnt thinking when I made it lol.

I suggest going with sli 580's, generally it's better to get a smaller amount of powerful gpu's so that there's always room for expansion, as opposed to getting a larger amount of weaker gpu's (unless its for folding of course).

thats what i see 3-gtx 570 is better than gtx 580 sli.
in "inugine heaven" 3-570 score 86.000 and gtx 580 sli score 57.000..
i think i would go with 3-570.

To OP.....if I had to choose between both your scenarios to your question, I'd go with GTX 580 and then wait. When gaming starts to push your one GTX 580, SLI it. It's actually what I'm doing.

Another choice, maybe by the time gaming reachs up to your card the new GTX 680 or some other AMD card is out that you might want to switch to all together in about eight months from now.

Yeah, SLI 580 is major overkill for 1920x1200. My HD 5850 runs everything just fine at above 30 FPS, and a single 580 is about twice as powerful. The benchmarks where it shows it being low are on games that are poorly optimized (Dragon Age 2) or just really graphically intensive (Metro 2033). You will NOT have to turn any textures/shadows/draw distances down if you get a single 580, but you might have to go with 2xAA/8xAF in some games. The picture quality always being 100% smoothed out at 8xAA/32xAF vs. the extra $500 is up to you, but I would really suggest getting just one and seeing how it goes. The main thing you will notice in games is the texture details, not the level of AA after 2xAA, and a single 580 will be more than enough for that in 95% of games.
