dark side AMD question

Thread Starter
Well guys, I used to be a AMD guy back when the socket 754 was popular.

I had a DFI lanparty and a 2.4ghz cpu

Well now i've always been intel, intel, intel.

Until today i went to the store and got a AMD 840 x4 3.2ghz AM3
and a Asus micro atx motherboard that actually has VERY good overclocking options, I was surprised, and i got all of this for 100 dollars out the door, then i remembered i had to pick up some ram so i got a 2gb stick ddr3 for 20 dollars.

Got the pc all together and no power my COOLERMASTER 650 real power died.
There RMA service sucks and VERY bad tech support.

Well got another psu, and wow this thing flys. Amazingly good. i said i wasn't going to do this, but.... i may be building a gaming rig now

oh and the question, How good is the 840x4 cpu ????

840's aren't the best overclockers, it lacks l3 cache, but will serve well in a properly balanced gaming machine

for 120 dollars total was it a good deal?
depends on the board
if you got a combo from microcenter (free board), it was a pretty good deal
http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...ndlePROMO.html

the 840 isnt considered a ture phenom, but its very good for an athlon

the i3 2100 combo might be a slightly better deal, but it cant be overclocked at all
http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...nding0325.html

if you got the ram at microcenter, do yourself a huge favor and return it
this kit is $50/35ar and overclocks extremely well

You got basically a full working machine for half the price of my processor alone. Yeah, you got one HELL of a deal. .

The Phenom 840 is basically a high clocked Athlon II quad. It's a good chip, but its about 1-3% slower clock for clock than the Phenom II. It's ROUGHLY on par with the first generation C2Q's (Q6600 / Q6700).

But, being a native deneb quad core, means that it SHOULD overclock decently. And depending on your board, it might do quite well.
