Loud grinding noise from PSU

Thread Starter
I just turned on my sig PC this morning and got an obnoxiously loud grinding noise from my PSU, almost exact same from an el-cheapo PSU I used to use in my OEM Pentium 4 rig every time it booted up after a year or two of usage (that had a terrible PSU in it though, and the PC and PSU was dust-filled, which my current two aren't). After turning it off and then on again it seems to have stopped. Can anyone tell me what could've caused this and if I should be worried? I only shut it down last night to give it a break as I've run it 24/7 for the past 2 months or so (for 70% of time it's just web surfing/downloading so nothing demanding, as I haven't run any benchmarks besides Furmark once a month or so, nor do I run F@H or anything like that, the other 30% of the time it's just gaming use), now I turn it back on and it's making this annoying sound? Also can someone tell me if the PSU I got has adequate protection and can't kill my PC if it screws up again?

If it goes away after a minute or two it's generally the bearings in your fans.

My fileserver did this after coming home with it being off for a month.

Haha, I saw this thread and I thought "that sounds just like my old OCZ stealthxstream" and sure enough...

It's not like they use poor quality fans (ADDA) but after about 10 minutes mine just stopped grinding and carried on as normal.

I had other problems with the switch shorting and the 12v rail spiking to 15v as well (I think it's common knowledge that the first rev of these PSUs were bad).

Funny, I just had a similair experience 5 mins ago when I started my pc. With me it only occurs when it's cold in the room (I left central heating off for a day)

Didn't notice any obvious damage, it just passes away.

I just turned my computer on and the same thing happened lol. Was freaking out cause I never heard that before. I'm not sure if it was the power supply fan or the back outtake fan. But it was freaky.

You might be able to fix it by taking it out, cleaning it up, and lubing the bearings with some good lube from a bottle (not a spray) like Rem Oil, sewing Machine Lube, Fishing Reel Lube, 3 in 1 Oil (the one without penetrating oil), etc.

Please note that taking the PSU apart to replace or lube the fan will void your warranty.

I think I'll avoid opening it up. I'm just wondering if getting a PSU with a high quality ball-bearing fan would eliminate the possibility of this issue happening at all in the future.

Most good quality PSU's have a good quality ball bearing fan in them. It's rare that one has the problem you are running into with a good PSU for several years unless the system is kept in a very hot or extremely dusty environment. I have several Antec's dating back 10 years that work just fine and their fans don't make any bearing noise at all.

ADDA aren't crap fans.

Seasonic uses them extensively.

If you get an ADDA sleeve bearing, then that's crap. Just about every other sleeve bearing fan on the planet is crap.

But Seasonic uses ball bearing ADDA fans, and there's no such grinding noise coming from them.

Question the components used in the fan before jumping on the brand name.
