Computer hannging/freezing

Thread Starter
I am experiencing this problem where the whole computer temporarily hangs for 10-20 seconds. It only happens under load, for ex. Flight Simulator X is a disk intensive game ... and when it has to load textures during the flight the whole system incl. mouse would freeze for 10-20 sec. and then it would go back to normal. It happens in almost all games and while using Jdownloader or WinRar to extract multiple archives. Too much disk activity is causing this freeze / hang problem.

I know this issue is related to Intel Rapid Storage Technology. However, most people had this problem with an SSD. Im using a WD Black 1TB Hard Drive (dskchk result ok, its a brand new drive also).

I tried uninstalling Intel RST but that didnt work, so installed it back. Also tried Registry trick from Crucial forums. Didn't work. What can i do to fix this? confused.gif
More Info: Temps: CPU - IDLE: 23*C LOAD: 55*C GPU - IDLE: 32*C LOAD: 57*C Motherboard is at 27*C IDLE... Both DVD and Hard drive are plugged into Intel 3g Ports. Using sig rig. Thanks all in advance.

Update: So i still have this issue. Reset the bios again today. Going to run Memtest and see if any of my chips are faulty. If they are OK then i will have to do a clean install of windows. At last resort, RMA the board (dont want to go there).

EDIT 2: So the problem still exists, i tested the ram at 1.5v@1366MHz ... also tested the ram at 1.675v @ 1600MHz. Used MemTest and it passed on both settings. Now, i can rule out the ram. It could be the board, hard drive, gpu or windows. I'm going to clean install windows this weekend.

Another Update: Uninstalled JMicron and Marvel Sata drivers. Did some testing, turns out that the eSata ports at the back won't work if remove the drivers. So i installed the JMicron drivers again. Now without the Marvel drivers. I still get them. Issue is accelerated when i run Nod32 Scan, JDownloader downloading to ext. hdd via usb, and Windows Backup also backing up to ext. hdd via usb. Also turned on PLL Overvoltage in the Bios. Haven't clean installed yet.

SEE BELOW!

SOLUTION: I did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate 64bit and haven't had a single hiccup. Played GTA IV and Portal 2 for hours, also ran JDownloader, Nod32 Scan and WinRAR Extracts at the same time on external drives etc. No problems. I guess it was the Intel RST that messed up the system. I am not using any driver from ASUS, just the stock drivers that come with windows 7, GPU drivers from AMD and Ethernet drivers from Intel website. Will update if anything changes.

Everything is stock... I even cleared the bios. Its definately the hard drive issue with regards to Intel RST Software installed. Those drivers are killing this computer. I just moved the drive to the Marvel 6G port, issue is still present.

You implied that uninstalling RST didn't work to solve the problem, so why do you think that it is still the cause?

Have you looked in event viewer to see if there are any events popping up that might be related?

Have you run the WD hard drive diagnostic from their website?

I've had problems with even new hard drives, so you never know, might be hardware.

Have you tried a different SATA cable?

Uninstalling RST probably left the drivers the way they are.. I uninstalled all the sata controllers through device manager. Restarted, it installed the default drivers now. WD Test result is PASS. Smart result is also PASS. I tried two different SATA Cables. I am confident its not the hardware.

Patriot Extreme Performance Gamer 2 Series Division 2 Edition 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 @ 1.65v stock. (timings are 9-9-9-24) Do you think that another clean install of Windows would fix the problem?

Have you made any progress on this?

I am having the same problem with my P67 and 2600k but I am running 16GB Corsair Vengeance and 2x160 Velociraptors in Raid 0.

Every thing is at stock speeds. and it is the new B3 revision. I will check the BIOS tonight to see if there is an update.

Nope... I still get them time to time. Good think im not the only one with this issue. I'm going to contact Asus and ask them to check and possibly come up with a new bios. Ill post the results here. Its definately not software on Windows. I switched the mode to IDE so hard drives are now using ide simulation and still same issue. Not Intel RST as that would only happen with SSDs. If you happen to fix it please do post and let me know thanks. PS: Do you also get bad sound? Such as screeching or weird noises?
