Question about temps...

Thread Starter
I dropped in an H50 yesterday to my box. This is my first attempt ever at watercooling, and I am thrilled with the results so far and can't wait to start overclocking.

Before I start doing so however, I need an explanation on the temps I should be concerned with. I am running an AMD Phenom II X6 1035T, hwmon shows the "CPU" temperature to be around 43 degrees celsius. Is this the socket tempt? There is also a section for the cores themselves and they are all around 22 degrees celsius which is ultra cool

Is it the "CPU" temp or "Core" temps I need to concern myself with most when I start OC'ing? Or both?

Only core temps, the CPU sensor is irrelevant.

Thanks, that was my suspicion, but just wanted to be sure Looks like I've got a "cool" baseline to start with, pun intended!!!

I'd say the exact opposite.

The core sensors on AMDx6 CPUs are known to have a "feature" where they read 10-15C low. With all the hex-core rigs on OCN, I've only seen 1 or 2 instances where the thermal sensors on the core produced believable data. Unless the OP is either under water there is no way on Earth his CPU cores are at ~20C barring his rig being outside on a cold day.

I would agree with this.

The core sensors on X6's are weird...

that's huge difference in temp between core and chip.

my x4 the difference between those 2 would be 5 deg max

It isn't the sensors so much as the way the values are interpreted. Intel sensors actually return thermal values. AMD chips use a register scale that gets turned in to temp value by the northbridge...on Thubans, it seems the NB has a bad equation for turning the register value->*C
