To be honest I've never had a disk failure in my life, so you must be fairly unlucky or have inappropriate conditions in your machine.
SSDs could be classes as more 'reliable' than mech HDDs as they are less prone to shocks and physical wear (they are also very noticeably faster and improve the snappiness of the whole system). But realistically both technologies should be pretty reliable.
