Phones for the university

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I need a pair of phones for university, preferably something with decent/okay sound isolation for me to study with. Definitely portability is a must. I've scanned many forums and I've listed a few that interest me.

My budget: $170
Genres I listen to (Greatest to least): Hip hop/R&B, Kpop, Alternative, Rock
  • Denon AH-D1000
  • SRH440
  • Audio Technica ATH-M50
  • Bose AE2
(AE2s are the only ones I've listened to myself)

Does anyone have any insight from experiences they have with any one of the listed?

Thanks.

I hear good things about the Audio Technica ATH-M50. I assuming you will be using your laptop soundcard? If so I highly recommend you a DAC like Fiio E7 which is like an external soundcard.

If you're going to be in and out of libraries a lot, in-ears would serve you better and be easier to carry. Are you open to in-ears at all?

Music taste?

Thanks for your input, and I doubt I will have the money to purchase an amp like that. It looks amazing though.

That is a good point, but I would prefer closed cans if possible. The reason for this is because I will be flying. What IEs do you recommend?
I currently use the Bose IEMs (Older version) for my desktop. I listen mainly to music that emphasizes bass.
Other genres I listen to are in my original post.

I had an internship in Shanghai two years ago and it was a 15 hour flight between Newark and Shanghai. On the way there, I wore closed headphones and I was nearly deaf by the time I got off the plane. On the way back, I wore Westone UM1 in-ears, kept them at a normal volume the entire flight and hearing was completely normal once I got off the plane. In-ears with long eartips provide a better seal and therefore better isolation. Etymotic in-ears typically have tri-flange tips while Westones use long Comply foam tips. I've always been a sucker for long Comply foams because they're much more comfortable.

However, due to your choices of music, I can't recommend either the Etymotic or Westone so look in this thread on Head-Fi and see if there's anything that catches your eye. My recommendation is that you divide your $170 budget up and buy one in-ear and one full-sized. Keep the full-sized in your dorm/apartment and keep the in-ear with you.

Wow, that's very helpful. I was actually really curious on how the Etymotic in-ears felt and performed. They looked like very good in ears.
The link is amazing, thanks a lot for your help.
