Fine tuning my 980x overclock for bigadv folding

>> Updated - faster ram enabled me to see ppd gains rather than losses above 4.3GHz, see this post

Hey Guys

I did a bunch of work fine tuning my 980x for bigadv and wanted to share the results in case it helps anyone. Thanks to Grandpa_01 and all you others for your help along the way.

Disclaimers:

- This is not super scientific - for *most* (but not all) of the results I did an overnight run with all other programs closed. I did not however repeat each test on the same part of the same WU as otherwise I would never get any work done (Gromacs claims to be at least pretty consistent across a WU though)
- Temps never exceeded 60C and were typically 48-52C
- I'm on linux, this may or may not affect anything
- I'm water cooled, if you are attempting to recreate my numbers exactly, don't blame me if you blow your cpu, ymmv
- This is a 980x, results may be different for other cpu architectures, results may even be different for different mobo's and memory

Initially I had overclocked to 4.6GHz and was surprised that my time frames were much longer than the expected ~20mins:

>> These tests are completed with a P6901 WU until otherwise stated

4.6GHz - 23x200, 1600-9-9-9-27 1.5VCore, 1.66VDram, 1.4VQPI - 28 mins/frame

Changing VCore

Doing some spot checking I saw that VCore seemed to affect the time frame so I investigated more:

4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-9-9-9-27 1.5VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 33 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-9-9-9-27 1.45VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 30 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-9-9-9-27 1.4VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 24 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 23 mins/frame

4.27 wasn't stable at 1.35Vcore

Conclusion - more vcore seems to hurt more than help - not sure why.

Memory Speed

4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 23 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1600-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 22 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 20.40 mins/frame

There are rumors out there that memory speed doesn't affect frame time. It does, and for me cas seems worth pursuing more than frequency.

Mult vs BClk

>> These tests are done with P2684 (slow) WU

The 980x lets you fine tune how do get to your overclock:

4.0GHz - 30x133 - 1600-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 31.2mins/frame
4.0GHz - 25x160 - 1600-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 36.25mins/frame
4.0GHz - 20x200 - 1600-9-9-9-27 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 31.5mins/frame

Now this I didn't expect, could it be that 8x and 12x memory multipliers are just better than 10x or is it something else?

Changing VQPI

4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.35VQPI - 33.25 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.4VQPI - 31.5 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.45VQPI - 30.75 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.5VQPI - 31.75 mins/frame

Seems like 1.45QPI is the sweet spot for me, this might be a function of the chosen memory timings however.

Max Frequency

After learning all of this I tried to see where my maximum frequency was:

4.4GHz - 33x133 1600-8-8-8-24 1.4125VCore, 1.72VDram, 1.5VQPI - 38 mins/frame
4.27GHz - 32x133 1600-8-8-8-24 1.4125VCore, 1.72VDram, 1.5VQPI - 34 mins/frame

It seems like 4.27 is really where my chip likes to be. Comparing to earlier results show that pushing for higher memory speed also seemed to make things worse. I didn't go slower than 4.27 because I'd already seen that going to 4.0GHz even with a reduced vcore slowed me down.

Conclusions

In the end I've decided to stick with

4.27GHz - 32x133 1066-7-7-7-21 1.375VCore, 1.64VDram, 1.45VQPI - 30.75 mins/frame on 2684 ~20.4 mins on 6901

- Pushing more vcore/qpi to get faster cpu/memory only seemed to hurt
- Memory speed does matter
- Why does more vcore hurt frame times when temps are under control
- What's up with the 10x memory multiplier result

So you dropped from 4.6ghz to 4.2ghz and got better results? wth.gif
If it was me I would have stayed at 4.6 then tried to tighten the memory as much as I could.

I know it seems weird, I don't understand it. However the vcore required for me to run 4.6GHz seems to be slowing it down more than the extra clock speed is gaining. Don't ask me why vcore makes a difference but for me it seems to.

Other 980x users have suggested that going above 4.4 was slower for them too.

Im shocked you need that much vcore. From what i been reading 980x like odd multi's not even ones. Ive notice temps are higher on even multis for me. I look for the thread over on XS for you that explains the odd vs even multi

im at 33x135 at 1.320 vcore and 1.3qpi. 8-8-8-24 1t. when i get a 6901 ill post tpf
but right now im at 23min on a 2686 with 2 580gtx folding with -smp11.

try doing your tests with an odd multiplier and not an even and see if things change for you.

I had thread in the Linux forum where we were discussing OCing in Linux. I found it harder to get stable in Linux vs windows (using Arch with my i3 rig) and a couple people reported the same issue.

I'm too scared to go over 1.30v on my 980, too expensive. I leave the experimenting to my i3 rig. tongue.gif

Yeah I've heard about the odd multiplier too, I didn't see any benefit when I was setting overclocks or in my folding testing. I can do a more specific test though, when I get some time I'll compare 32x133 with 31x138, the memory frequency however will change slightly.

Yes my vcore is very high for a 980x. Either I have a bad batch or my motherboard/power supply is holding things back somehow.
