Yes my vcore is very high for a 980x. Either I have a bad batch or my motherboard/power supply is holding things back somehow.

what i also read is not to have higher then a 1.3qpi i notice yours is at 1.4qpi

there a reason for that?

Yeah I've generally seen that too, generally I bump my vcore two notches higher than I need for windows stability runs and that seems to get me stable for bigadv in linux. It's not the most scientific method but it's worked so far.

Yeah i was nervous about going up to 1.5V on the 980x the first time. Really though I think 1.4V is fine for years. I haven't seen any noticeable degradation over the couple of months or so I ran with 1.5V. Before that I ran 1.4125Vcore (on air) for 6 months. It was too hot to fold though.

I have 18gb of memory which stresses the IMC heavily, if you want to run that much memory at speed you need high qpi's. Certainly a QPI <= 1.45V didn't hurt me in frame times, whether it does long term damage I can't answer.

understandable. i highly doubt 1.5v will hurt these chips. especially if cooled properly.

I believe that your memory is what is holding you back from running at 4.6 efficiently although I have found that with my 980's that 4.45Ghz is about as far as they will go with 2000Mhz ram 7-7-7-24-74 after that they slow down. I have found that 3 980's are very memory critical when it comes to folding. It appears to me that if you cannot supply fast enough memory to these chips for the GHz you are running them at it chokes them. For instance the 980 I mentioned above if I run 1800Mhz memory with it at 8-8-8-24-74 it does its best at 4.325Ghz same everything except memory.

Any way I am happy to see you have been able to confirm what I have been telling you and good job of documenting it. At least you took the time to do it and gave me a place to point to the next time somebody says memory does not make a difference with i7's.

And by the way I have had to drop my OC on Linux it is not a stable as Windows for me when OCed.

GOOD JOB

I am darn new to folding but...... it seems like each fold could be different amount of work. Would it be possible to do the test with the 1 WU and do it over and over again? I notice it downloads and exe so could you just save that exe and run it over and over again to make sure your computer is doing the same work and really test the other variables?

Yes you can Just save a copy of the FAH folder to your desk top and just copy it back to the orriginal location every time you want to run a new test. That way it will always start at the same place. Disconect from the internet when you do this because it will try to download a new WU after it times out.

So while i appreciate the work done in this thread it could be redone on 1 WU to really settle some of this dispute?
I maybe could come up with a spare i7 to use but time would more more of an issue then a machine.

Thanks Grandpa - I think you're right on this, my memory is rated for 1600-9-9-9 and I can barely get it to run faster than that, so I think I have to settle for 4.27GHz unless I can trade in the memory for something faster.

When I get some time, I'll take out the slower 12gb sticks and run with only the faster 6gb, that should prove whether the memory is indeed throttling the cpu.

Yes this would be the absolute best way to do it, however it takes a lot more time and I wouldn't have got any folding done in the mean time. Gromacs is supposed to be pretty consistent across each % of a work unit, however I'm not sure if every P6901 WU should take the same amount of time. Certainly P6901 and P2684 are vastly different and that's why I only compared the same WU on each sweep.
