need a little help (limited or no connection)

parents computer. fresh xp pro (sp3) install. been running great and connected to the net for the past week.

now all of the sudden, theyre are getting 'limited or no connectivity' message. they called their ISP and went through their stuff and everything checked out.

weve changed cables, tried restarting both the computer and the modem. now im at a loss. i read a few places online saying to remove sp3 as it was the problem, but i really dont see the point in that seeing as its had sp3 on it all week and working fine.

maybe uninstall the NIC and have windows re-install it?

any advise?

Control panel > network connections > right click on your nic > repair.

Works for me 99% of the time. What has happened is your IP has been stolen by another computer or something similar.

weve tried that... (sorry, forgot to mention that) it failed.

tried /release (success!) and /renew (fail)... that didnt work.

hmm.

edit: this pc is hooked up directly to the modem... would having it go through a router then to the pc make any difference?

edit2: that did nothing.

Right click Local Area Connection. Select 'Status'. Go to 'Support' tab. See what the IP address is.

Also, go back to the 'General' tab. Select 'Properties' button. click the words 'Internet Protocol' and then the properties button below. See if there is a green dot next to "Obtain IP address automatically", if not, click it and save the setting.

Also, do they use Norton or Mcafee for their antivirus?

1) Make sure you don't have a 169.254.x.x IP. If you do, attempt a /release and /renew. If you still cannot obtain an IP, power cycle the router.

2) You may encounter artificial timeout limits by swapping between having the router hooked to the modem and the PC hooked to the modem. It would be advised to keep the router connected to the modem for any diagnostic steps.

do they have a router?

if its directly connected to a cable modem (no router or switch/hub)
and the pc assigns its own ip 169.254.xxx.xxx
then unplug the cable modem from power and lan for 5 minutes
wait 5 minutes
plug the power in, wait for the internet light to turn on
then plug in the lan cable, and renew the ip on the pc

looks like they had some guy come out and test things. from what i can gather from our conversation (w/ my mother), it sounds like the modem isnt the problem. he said it is either the firewall that i installed () or the Nic itself. i know its not the firewall (we tested that theory)... i suppose it could be the Nic, but with out testing/buying another theres no way to tell.

a lot of the info you guys are giving me, i cant actually physically do. my parents live 2+ hours from me and they are both very basic when it comes to computers... so talking them through something simple like uninstalling a program can turn into a hour+ phone conversation (LOL).

Norton antivirus is what they use and 'obtain IP address automatically' is and has been checked.

list of things that have been tested or tried:
power cycle the modem (30+ seconds)
ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew
'repair' connection
different cables

I have that issue sometimes with xp.That damn exclamation point!Usually I just fiddle with it a bit by uninstalling and rebooting or rebooting the modem and router.
