and i do know norton can be a problem causer, but in all the time ive been using it, i can honestly say that its never been the cause of my frustrations. next time i talk to them, i will tell them to turn norton off just to make sure.

that i dont know... automatic updates is turned on and they never shut down their pc, so i suppose it couldve updated while they were at work. ill ask, but i doubt either of them would know.

this is why it bothers me building computers or being known as the computer guy in the family... i automatically become tech support.

windows auto updating drivers is a pain, if a driver works it shouldnt need to update it

first turn off windows driver updates
Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Windows Update Driver Settings.
Select Never search Windows Update for drivers.
Click OK twice, and then close the System dialog box.

then have them find the oem/mobo disc and reinstall all drivers

now would this only be for when new hardware is found, or just when ever a new driver update is available?

...There's always a first time.

For some reason this is the most common response when I single out a piece of hardware or software as a potential problem, yet it makes no logical sense as an argument?

I would definitely look into Norton as being the cause, though I know it can be hard to troubleshoot since all you can really do is disable the firewall and if that doesn't work, uninstall Norton all together.

You should uninstall Norton, it usually causes a lot of problems. It won't hurt to try.

turns out it was the Nic. after over an hour of trying to talk my step-dad through installing the new card the correct way, they got their internet back. you'd think that following the instructions on how to install something like this right from the start, but nah... we'll just throw it in and hope it works. LOL

now they can get back to playing hours upon hours of facebook games.

thanks for all the help everyone.
