origionally had my campaign unit size set to 5x which was mad. I do however want it to be realistic... so what was the size of the armies in good ol japan back there....

I dont mind turning down the settings....

(or even just give me battalion sizes... ill do the rest of the math...)

When I get back to the house (from work) I'll take a look through a few of the books and scale model guides for the period and come up with some numbers as to what the historical scale of clan armies where. Thing is, many of the smaller battles between clans were really quite small, with only a few battles with thousands of troops.

I would just leave the unit size on ultra or something unless you still want more, depends on how much you want/can handle I guess.

Engine supposedly supports over 50k units on screen but I don't know how laggy that might be. Did some 5k+ battles earlier and when fast forwarding and archers shooting arrows it dipped into 10fps or lower

Well as it goes I myself am playing on ultra everything... so you must be editing a .cfg file?

Anywho...

Referencing Stephen Turnbill's book Samurai Warfare, in 1575 Uesugi muster roll's 1018 troops as 'other', 3,609 spearmen, 321 matchlockmen and 566 mounted samurai.

All things considered equal as it stands at a 1:1 unit representation on screen to lets say 200 ashigaru, than thats pretty much what it was. There just weren't that many big ass armies outside of perhaps Oda, Tokugawa, and Toyotomi, at least not in the period that the game models... Suppose theres always room for expansions to include Korea... never know.

As far as the unit cap goes... it sorta sucks, but I suppose its a concession cause not everyone who plays games frequents the OC.

there's only 1 way to play total war games.

you MUST set unit size to ultra. battles need to be epic.

yes modifying the scripts and amongst other things modifying the number of units in each 'card'.

Thx a lot there bud. sounds about right and i have to say i am not too surprised but slightly disappointing in a way haha was hoping for the battles to be 1000 men per ashigaru unit XD.

Something you mention there about the way in which the size of the armies fielded increase in the more so well established regions. Its a shame this isnt reflected in the game. Far too often I find myself in the first few years of the game fending off full stacks of ashigaru hordes in the middle of the mountains...

But I suppose i cant have it all

Thx again m8

Thats just it though, ashigaru were often recruited from the peasantry and used in times of need, but soon there after disbanded... the only units that were ever kept in the rank and file were the matchlock and of course, the samurai themselves.

So it would not surprise me to see maybe 1-2k ashigaru doing there bit for the Daimyo (landed gentry) and then be released from service the following year once the campaign was concluded. To be fair, they are really the rank and file, hardly worth there long term upkeep. Service like that was often used as part of tax payments, so it was not uncommon to see just that.

I use them just like that in game, making a hoard of them, and once my objectives are secure, just disband them or fold the units into each other to get away from resupply times/cost to field bum units.
