How do I completely restore iTunes (ratings, playcount, etc.) after reformat?

Hey all,

Was wondering if you guys could walk me through how to completely restore my iTunes library after a reformat. I have it all backed up on an external - the entire iTunes directory that was under User > My Music > iTunes so I have the library files. The issue is, the user name has changed (it's my brother's computer) so I don't think the file location data will be correct. Before the username was "Cizzle" (don't ask) and now it is "Cort".

If I double click the iTunes Library.itl file after I've copied the My Music folder back to his "Cort" user folder, it loads the library but none of the tracks playbecause iTunes can't find them. They are marked with the little ! thing.

Any idea how to fix this short of manually pointing the program to all the files (which will take forever - his library is a huge mess - multiple folders in different locations, etc.)? I hope it is easy because I'm going to have to do the same thing soon for my own library (new HP DM1Z coming in a week or so). I really hate the idea of having to re-create all my playlists, do my ratings again, etc. There must be a streamlined way to do this, given how many people use iTunes, and the fact that most people swap out computers every few years or so.

Thanks.

The only way is if you backed up the folder located in drive C >> Users >> my music >> ITunes.

Usually you just copy and paste make sure every thing is in the right directory.

I have it backed up, but I'm thinking because it isn't the exact same file path as my old computer (since the username has changed) the library isn't going to work right - none of the files are where the library thinks they are. I've copied everything back the way they were before but again, I get the little exclamation point next to the songs, which means iTunes has no idea where they are. Wondering if there is a way to fix this short of manually telling it where everything is.

Try going on iTune >> Edit >> Preference >> Advanced >> and change the iTune media location to where ever your music folder is located.
