How does the age of sockets go?

I am still new so take it easy on me. It seems like a lot of the 1156 boards are becoming hard to find with a lot of the 1155 ones still out there. Did the 1155 come before or after the 1156? Trying to upgrade little by little but not sure which one would be better. I know a lot of you will probably say go with the 1366 (or if there is something newer than that) but I don't have that kind of cash. I know the boards are close in price but the cpu isn't. Keep in mind what I am currently running as to what would be a upgrade to me lol!

1366 came first

then 1156

then 1155

What is your budget for the cpu/ram/mobo?

1156/1366 came out really close to each other

You're wrong...

1366 and 1156 came out around the same time, if anything 1156 slightly earlier, but after 775.

then 1155 came out.

then there will be ivy bridge.

Ok so you are saying that 1155 is the newest thing out? It came after the others. 775 came out (oldest) then 1156 and 1366 (close to the same time) and then 1155 after both of those?

That's correct. 1155 is the latest and greatest (with 2011 coming out soon). 1366 and 1156 are on their way out, and 775 is pretty much dead.

1155 is mainstream, 1336 is the current flagship.

But 1336 is starting so show it's age and only the 980X/990X are flagship, the 2600K benchmarks higher than the 950.
