lapping 1366?

Thread Starter
i'm getting terrible surface contact between my cpu and water clock.

it's an i7 970 with a rasa 750 h2o kit. ive never lapped a cpu before but my cpu is apparently very concave.

here's a look at the cpu
http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/allpa.../hutx58cpu.jpg

here's a look at the block
http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/allpa...utx58block.jpg

so the question...... lap it or send it back claiming it never worked in the first place?

I would lap it.

Mainly because I am too lazy.

EDIT:I guess you could kill it on purpose and then RMA it!

I note that you say "apparently". Are you sure it is the lack of flatness of the CPU and not the TIM spread etc?

im sure it's the cpu and not the block. i had a 950 in there at 4.4 before and temps and contact were good. i used a very thin coat of thin zalman thermal paist because i feal it works well on non porous cpu heat sinks. i susequently used an ample ammount of artic 5 to fill in the gap and temps dropped by over 10c at same settings durring prime.

i'm leaning towards sending the chip back to newegg and just saying its broken, not like they are gunna check, and getting another. if anyone is interested they seem to be shipping batch #3020a481 at the moment. ive found nothing on the web about this batch.

Do you let the TIM spread itself?

You should put the tim on in a " X " with an overlapping " + " and let it spread itself.
Sort of like a star.
