AMD chips have never driven down the price of Intel chips.

It's also never really wise to not purchase at all because of something in the pipeline. There is always something in the pipeline, always.

Also, this is an Intel build in the Intel forum. We'd be concerning ourselves with Ivy Bridge way before Bulldozer .

intel already made the SB chips super cheap compared to the first gen i-series. We can only assume this is because they believe BD willl be competitive in both price and performance

not true, P4's were cheaper than dirt
that is generally true unless you know your upgrading after the release of this next product (I willl be upgrading to SB or BD when BD comes out depending on price and performance)
IvyBridge is going to be a sidegrade (just a die shrink) unless you go to the 2011 platform

Just wanted to update:

This is where I am at:

- 990X EE (Based on all the feedback, I am comfortable with this CPU)
- ASUS Rampage III Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (I realize this is meant for 3+ SLI but I like all the features. If someone points out a board that costs less but with the same features minus the 3+ SLI, I'll use that one.)
- SeaSonic X Series X-850
- SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity (The 6950 can easily be turned into a 6970 and the 6990 is just too loud. NVidia doesn't have any cards that have 2+ mini Display port connections that I've seen)
- Patriot Viper II Sector 7 Edition 24GB (1600mhz)
- COOLER MASTER Intel Core i7 compatible V10 Hybrid TEC RR-B2P-UV10-GP 120mm CPU Cooler (I realize water cooling advocates will ask why i'm not water cooling. At this point I don't want to. If I ever move to the 6990 or higher, I'll get a water block for the CPU and GPU. I dont need to water cool just for the CPU)
- COOLER MASTER Storm Sniper SGC-6000-KXN1-GP

Now only if NewEgg wouldn't run out of stock every other day on the components I need.

Have you considered the asus 6970?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-430-_-Product

They're Great cards, and have 4 displayports for you to use. Plus it will run quieter than a reference 6990 or 6970 (both of which are pretty loud). The asus 6950s are also good, and have plenty Of outputs.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...rder=BESTMATCH

And depending on how hard you want to overclock, you could always save money and get the i7 970. Unlocked multipliers wont really matter unless your overclocking really hard.

I hear the v10 cooler isnt all its cracked up to be. Use a good megahalem or a noctua NH-D14 until you want to watercool.

And be careful unlocking to a 6970. I heard it makes the cards run a little hot.

If you are only looking at running the 990x around 4.2 ghz you could go with a 970, same 6C/12T

I cannot believe I didn't see this. Wow, thank you very much. I'll take a look at this card. It solves all my problems as long as it doesn't sound like a Train like the 6990.

If you are looking at a quiet case you should not be looking at the storm sniper, too much mesh will let sound through. For a quiet case I would recommend the Silverstone FT02, or the Lian Li 2120B. Also, most of the newer graphics cards will sound like trains unless you replace their stock cooling with either aftermarket air or watercooling.

I wanted to provide an update. I've updated my profile with my system specs. The Sapphire HD 6990 is not nearly as loud as I thought it would be. You cannot even hear it when it's idle. It could be due to my case and where I have it located.

I attemped to play Crysis 2 in 7650x1440 (EyeFinity) on Hardcore. But, it started showing graphics artifacts and slowed down. I am guessing the 6990 started to over heat.

I do realize I have stock cooling on the CPU. I have been looking at the EK watercooling solutions since they just release a 6990 waterblock.

http://img576.imageshack.us/g/img0591pb.jpg/

Also in this picture I have since remounted the stock cpu fan and turned it around so it's blowing the air out of the case. That seemed to lower the temps by 4 degrees.

I'll be performing some benchmarks, then work on changing out the cooling and overclocking. What is the max temp the CPU should be when overclocking? And I am guessing the stock fan is garbage and I need to wait until I replace it to overclock.

I wanted to give an update to "I attemped to play Crysis 2 in 7650x1440 (EyeFinity) on Hardcore. But, it started showing graphics artifacts and slowed down. I am guessing the 6990 started to over heat."

I installed the HD 6990 in the second PCI-E slot. Whenever I would slightly touch the card or jar the computer my system would reset. The system would also reset randomly while it was on. The graphics would have severe issues (jittery, artifacts, slowdown). I moved the card from slot 2 to the first slot. This seemed to solve all the issues I was having. I am wondering why this would of been a problem?

Also it says my DRAM BUS voltage is 1.6xx volts. Doesn't this seem high? I ran CPU-Z and it states the memory is at 1.5v, but the BIOS says the DRAM BUS voltage is very high.

I reset my motherboard to factory settings, then changed SATA to ACHI from IDE.

Does the motherboard manual state that the first card in your system has to be in the top PCI-E slot?

Oh, and de rigeur: Is your BIOS flashed up to the latest?
