Just returned my EVGA GTX 570 HD, which card to get? Update: Got HD 6950 2Gb!!!

So as stated in my Sig, I have returned my GTX 570 HD from EVGA that I purchased less than a month ago. I bought the card for the full size 1.4a HDMI port, but then noticed that the card was 1 inch shorter, exhausted hot air inside my case, and had a GTX 560 Ti cooler on it. After much thought, I was getting less than what I could have gotten for the same price. I just received my money back and I'm looking at other options.

I have heard good things about Nvidia and the cards never really have any bugs with drivers or games. AMD on the other hand is still knows to have unstable drivers and have a few bugs here and there (I play GTA IV a lot, there are a few problems with AMD cards). Even though I choose Nvidia over AMD, I still feel like I might go the AMD route in GPU's. Recently, I started to look at the HD 6950 and 6970 for the VRAM and the price/performance.

Here are the 3 cards that I am mainly looking at within my price range:

1. AMD HD 6950 2 Gb
2. AMD HD 6970 2 Gb
3. Nvidia GTX 570 1.28 Gb

I was wondering what card to get out of these. I use a 1080p monitor and might get a second one, although it isn't very likely. I play A LOT of GTA IV so playing with all the sliders @ 100 with no VRAM bottleneck would be nice. I am not crazy with folding although I have a PS3 that folds a lot and it is rumored that a new AMD client is coming out. Also, I have heard that PhysX is becoming more and more obsolete so it really isn't a plus, and I can always get a 8800 for $45 and get hacked drivers.

Also, suggestions of what manufacturer to get the card from would be nice, as there are too many to choose from.

Update!!!!!!
Hey guys, just yesterday I pulled the trigger and bought myself a Gigabyte HD 6950 2 Gb card. I figured the Gigabytes weren't selling as good as HIS or MSI so I got this one. For $270, this in my opinion was a good deal.

BTW, did you know my first dedicated GPU was an ATi X1600 128mb card? Its in my iMac biggrin.gif

Yes I have heard of the unlocking method saving you $100 but I have heard of people getting artifacts with the unlock and you cant overclock an unlock 6950 as well as a regular 6970. I am still leaning towards the GTX 570 EVGA side as I have recently saw a video of the stuttering in GTA IV as well as a few glitches.

GTX 580? If no, then 6970.

If I didnt fold I would be all over the 6970 (or unlocked 6950) they look like amazing cards. I installed one in my dads co-workers computer and it was beast.

I am becoming less and less a fan of Nvidia, folding is pretty much the only reason I have their cards. I might looking into BOINC soon and switch to AMD (next generation)

So you guys are saying I should go the HD 6970 (Or unlocked 6950) route? Yes I am not going to be folding or anything like that but I am still a little skeptical since AMD cards have many glitches with games and the drivers aren't stable all the time.

I am still kind of considering saving money and going the unlocked 6950 route as I am not really a GPU overclocking person. I will look over the cards one last time and then make my final decision.

Also, will my Corsair HX650w PSU be able to handle HD 6950's in Crossfire? I have heard of people running GTX 560's in SLI on a 650w and seeing 6950's use less power than it is possible, right? I will not be running furmark or anything, just playing metro and other games.

Assuming you keep your i7 @ around 3ghz you should be fine power consumption wise.. Even otherwise. 650w is probably plenty.

6950 2gb FTW.

Last question. Since I am willing to buy the HD 6950 and try it out, have you guys heard anyone having trouble overclocking due to AMD's reision of the card. I heard they di something that doesn't allow you to flash the extra shaders or something. I heard these cards were made in January and should already be here.

Also, any reference manufacturer suggestions? I was thinking MSI, but want to know what manufacturer you guys suggest.
