2500k core speed jumps.

i know this is probably a verry stupid question with a verry easy answer..but im new to all this

I used the "OC tuner" in my bios, which said it would OC to an estimated 4308.4 Mhz OC. so i did it, checked CPU-Z... and its keeps changing between 1648.0 Mhz to 4302.0mhz and a x16 and x42 multiplyer. i know theres probably some bios setting that slowing down my CPU when idle to the x16 multiplyer...but how do i stop it? i dont want to play around too much with bios things, so i figured id ask

Also, is it worth turning off whatever setting this is? would having it at 4300mhz all the time be worse?

leaving the setting on will save you alot of power. thats about it. the setting is called speedstep i believe.

You'll only be using more power I think.. Check out your vcore at idle and during load.

sandy bridge is meant to be like that if I recall, why wanting the power when not needed ? When the power will be required it will jump to 4.3 on its own

Speed step also probably adds to cpu longevity, disabling it probably shortens lifespan. How much? Who knows but it is something to consider.
