Which Mobo would you use?

Hi there, I have a silly question about HyperTransprt freqs...

I have 2 Unlocking AM3 MoBos
- ASUS M4N78 Pro (HT 3.0 up to 2600mhz)
- ASRock N68C-S UCC (1000mhz HT link)

And I have a Phenom II X3 720 Black Processor, on which it appears the M4N cannot unlock the 4th core and run stable. I haven't fiddled with settings much as the system runs nice and smooth even at stock clocks with 3 cores.

Conversely, I've had much more success with my Sempron 145 on the N68 Board, it is Unlocked to AII X2 445 and runs stable at 3.0 Ghz and 1.2v. It is also a DDR2/DDR3 Combo board, but the onboard sound lacks SPDIF of any sort, which would necessitate a sound card for audio thru the DVI-HDMI cable. I have a suitable sound card.

My question is simply, Will the 1000mhz HT Link on the N68 bottleneck the 720 in comparison to the 2000mhz available on the M4N?

I've seen some vague discussion alluding the K10.5 procs don't even use 1000mhz worth of bandwidth, but nothing definitive. I suppose given the N68S-C came out long after HT 3.0 and still uses 1000mhz, it is plausible.

Given the option, which do you think is the better board? I'm trying to decide if I should pull my computers apart for a rebuild.

If the N68 is the way to go, would an upgrade to DDR3 be beneficial, or is my current DDR2 going to carry me for a while?

Unlocking with the ASRock (3-phase or 2+1 phase power) would be an EXTREMELY bad idea
the Sempron being lower TDP would be safer but the 720 would blow it up on unlock

Thanks for the input, but I don't quite follow... You mean to say the ASUS has 3-phase and the ASRock has 2+1-phase? How is that different? They both use a 24 pin main power connection... Or do you mean the ASRock is 2+1 phase and is somehow inferior to the ASUS power system?

Or are you saying the TDP of the 720 will increase past 95W under UCC and fry the N68 board?

Forgetting about unlocking or OCing for a minute, (gasp) would 1000mhz vs 2000mhz HT Link make a difference to the 720?

There is a grading system for mobos. The higher the better to oc on.
Low : 2 - 4 phase power (Sucks for ocing)
Mid : 4+1 and 4+2 (mild ocing)
Mid-high : 6+1 and 6+2 (great for ocing)
High : 8+1 and 8+2 (extreme ocing meaning sub zero cooling system)

Nice writeup XD! +1 for learning me something new. I hadn't ever considered (or even known I should consider) this factor. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction ffejrxx!

Got it, so stick with my 4+1 phase M4N78 Pro with my 720, or find something better.

Doesn't look like too bad of a board for your current build.

To get something better always asks the question of

What do you want/plan to do with it?
and
What kind of budget are you looking at?
