Recommend a graphics card - Page 2

@OP

Anything above a GTX260 will work just fine. Pick your poison. DX11 really has no benefit at the moment other than a handful of games and still has yet to be seen whether or not it will find it's place in games (solidified) in the near future.

GTX260 (216)
GTX275
GTX285
GTX460
GTX560Ti

ATI 4850
ATI 4870
ATI 4890
AMD 6850
AMD 6870

Any of those will suit just fine. If you want the glory:

GTX 470
GTX 570

AMD 6950
AMD 6970

If you want cheap graphics you'll be looking at an ATI 6850/70 or nvidia 550/560.

I found this fits in your budget nicely.

Out of those, the HD 6950 is FAR superior, with its 98.6% unlocking potential.

But that's 250$, twice the OP's budget.

OP, unfortunately, you can't go any higher than a GTX 460 with your budget.

I highly recommend getting the HD 6950 - you will not regret it.

Don't even consider getting a GTX 580. It's exactly twice the price and 10% faster.

But don't worry, the GTX 460 is 10-20% faster than a GTX 280, and can run ANY game @ 1680x1050, even Crysis on High.

Oh lord. So much mis-information. Why, FireHawk?

You're giving him a 192-core card for the price of a 336-core card, just because the former is overclocked? Horrible.

And the 560 Ti? Unlocked HD 6950 for the same price nets GTX 480 performance.

Thread Starter
You guys are posting faster than I can reply. Got a few questions. I have onboard ATI graphics, is there any advantage to getting an ATI card vs a Geforce card as some have suggested? Is there a minimum amount of memory I should be looking for? Also are there any brands I should buy or stay away from? I am kind of new to all this so give me details.

No, they're both equal these days. Just get the best price/performance card from either.

Which would be the HD 6950 at this point, due to its ability to unlock to an HD 6970.

No need to go any higher, but if you want lower, GTX 460 is the best find.

Minimum? 512MB. Luckily, every card these days has far more.

You'd be fine with 768MB for 1680x1050. I'd get 1GB for 1080p, 1.5GB for 2560x1600.

Nope, they're all good. The only thing to note is the models of each card. Some cards come overclocked (not worth anything), some cards come with better coolers, etc.

GTS450.

your current monitors resolution isnt very intensive, and neither will your DIY projector. might as well try to save some money.

$100 open box msi cyclone on the egg. go get it.

Horrible idea.

For 115$ AR you can get a card twice as powerful - GTX 460.

Besides, a GTS 450 won't run his games on max.

I was trying to work inside his budget. I fully agree the 6950 is the better card, but its also way outside the range he provided. Though I will admit I haven't looked at the benchmarks on the 550 yet.
