Need Help on a m-itx build

Thread Starter
hi:
my current system is in the specs below.

its a great system but i want to go smaller.

im thinking about getting a gtx 590 as it is supposed to be cooler then the 6990 eventhough it uses a little more watts

im pretty sure its going to be an intel system but im not sure which one
is it the P67 that can overclock and the H67 can not?

i dont know i just want to be able to hit a real high overclock so i can buy a cheap used intel cpu (i was originally thinking something like a i7 920/930) but if i am going m-itx than it will have only pcie 16x slot so i really do not need an i7 do i as those will only start to work if you have sli/crossfire?

im not sure.....my gaming rig now is not good enough but im not buying a 6core intel for $500
i probably want the best chip for under $300 and a motherboard under $150
i dont know hardly anything about the newer intels
i been doing amd since athlon 600 slot A in 1999 or 2000?

my last one was a p3 500
im going to be selling all of my system most likely.

dunno if id replace the board/chip just yet. especially if your going smaller. Perhaps a smaller board, a single video card, and a better power supply in a smaller case would be ideal. Not to much performance gain to intel just yet for you. many come ivy but around that time bulldozer might actually prove it exists.

Hi tdbone1,

I totaly understand where your coming from, I myself downsized to mini-Itx and I can see why you would want dual gpu already on the same PCB. Let me try my best to help you, The p67 does not have onboard video you would need a gpu which is ok since you want to get a gpu its a good choice and the P67 is what you want if you want to do some good OC or maybe great OC. The h67 does have on board video and and is very limited to OC capabilities, thought the option to OC is there just not as robust as the P67.

As far what chip and gpu to get read some reviews and go with your gut feeling. Look for the CPU get a mid level to entry high end versions. If your goal is to do some mad OC and have the best chip for that board try getting a used uber high end cpu never hurts. For the GPU check out the reviews and benchmarks and see what fits your needs. Both will do eyefinity though Nvidia calls it surround gaming and requires sli, note that the 590 is single slot its an sli card do to the fact it has 2 gpus thus allowing you to do the surround gaming with nvidia. It really comes down to you and what you want to use. If you dont plan on using eyefinity go with the nvidia. If you want eyefinity and the fastest card out there then ATI 6990 is your bet.

People will tell you drivers suck for either card but just know they get fixed with updates. Some wil tell you ati or nvidia suck thats just fanboy talk.

I personally like AMD/ATI for the hardware though hate their ccc and I love Nvidia's Desktop Manager and OC utility yet not a big fan of their cards. Although I have noticed something about Nvidia and that is that the memory interface tends to always be higher with nvidia(384bit) than ati(256).

Whatever you decide I am sure you will love it. Because you built it and will be playing your fav games.

I myself have a dilemma if i should get the 6870 or 5970 decisions decisions

is there a cube case that is designed around NOT having a dvd-rom or 5 and 1/4 bays?
im really only going to have 2 (2.5") ssd`s in it so if it can get rid of the 3 1/2bays to it would be ok
im just thinking about space and heat at this point

will all cube cases be able to take a dual gpu card like a gtx 590 or ati 6990?
im not talking about the length im talking about from the pcie slot on the motherboard to the side of the case when you put a dual gpu card in that slot
ex:
will the side of the vcard hit the side of the case
like the hsf cover of the vcard have enough room to clear and get ventilation because of the side of the case?

i7 920/930 use X58 chipset which is socket 1366. H67/P67 chipset is socket 1155 (Sandy Bridge). You will likely not find many socket 1155 CPUs on the used market at this time.

P67 is able to use up to the maximum CPU multiplier. H67 is only able to go 5x multiplier up (I think) which in most cases is lower than the CPU will be capable of, but still gives you a free boost with minimal work. This is of course with a "K" series processor.

There is no current case on the market with your exact requirements.

I think the Silverstone SG07 might fit the card, otherwise you may need to go something larger like the Lian Li PC-Q08. Both case fit dual slot cards, I'm just not sure the SG07 can fit the length of the card.

its not a cube but went with a silverstone SG02-F, bit wider.

Fits the mITX fine w/ full length GPU and i have room to grow to mATX if I wish. Air flow is pretty darn nice design. I just need to fine a adapter to fit the 2 5.25" drive bays to a perf'd 120mm fan.

pretty nice case`s

i remember reading a review (dang i wish i would have bookmarked it) but i can remember a couple features it had.

the SSD`s were mounted like this
looking at the cube from face on:
1 on left side and one on right side (i thought the area was clear where you could see the SSD`s also

the 5 1/4 drive bays were removable somehow

wish i could remember it

i been looking but cant seem to find it.
i remember it was a video review and it showed the 5 1/4 bay being removed so a bigger cpu cooler could be used
the ssd were mounted on the sides of the case (one on each side)
crap i want to say it was a LIAN LI but i am not sure at all
