I can get one with an 18-55mm lens for 475. Should I go for it?

***first DSLR***

I'll use it mainly for Tech videos + pictures.

worth it?

I did buy the d3100 and is a very good start up camera. If you invest on some nice lens then you should be happy with it. I return mine 2 days ago not because something is wrong with it but I wanted a camera that I can grow on. So I got the nikon D7000 and 35mm 1.8

The pictures are amazing

It's a great camera and well worth the money, in my opinion.

Just a word to the wise: I'm pretty sure that you've seen YouTube videos made with the D3100, and something you have to be aware of is that the lenses matter a lot. If you made your decision partly on the fact that the video has a nice, creamy OOF effect that isolates the subject, it has to do with the lens more than the camera itself.

If this is something you'd want in your photos and videos, look into a fast prime like the AF-S 35mm f/1.8.

Also, with the D3100, be aware that it doesn't have an in-body autofocus motor, so lenses must have a motor to autofocus. This means that Nikon's AF line will not be able to autofocus, and only its AF-S line will have autofocus capabilities on the D3100.

Unless you need a wireless flash commander or swivel screen, I'd get the T2i. Exact same sensor inside, has 30FPS @ 1080p with manual exposure settings, and is cheaper. If you still want more video control than the T2i offers, check out Magic Lantern firmware.

My personal opinion is that the T3i isn't worth it. I've come across instances where a swivel screen would be nice (when it's physically impossible to get my head eye-level with the viewfinder or LCD), but it's not worth the price IMO. As for wireless flash commander, my Yongnuo setup might not be as nice as a Canon but it does the job well for less than half the price.

problem is I can't get the T2i for even close to the same price, its like literally double here in Canada.

D3100 is a very capable camera. Go for it, The first lens that I recommend you buy is the Nikon 35mm 1.8.

D3100 is a great camera indeed. I started off with the D3100 and it is easy to function and learn on.

Well yeah the reality is I don't have a camera at all, I won't be doing anything "professional" when it comes to photography, and no prints.

I just want better video than a compact, and better stills for product showcasing (like video cards n stuff).

The camera comes with an 18-55mm lens, is that good enough for now?

I just got D3100 with 18-55mm lens some days ago and i am loving it. Its not-so-heavy or big and everything is pretty noob-friendly. Lens are good enough for everyday photography but you might need 55-200mm VR ones down the road.
