The camera comes with an 18-55mm lens, is that good enough for now?
The kit 18-55mm lens is more than enough for a beginner. I kinda regret selling mine

The 18-55mm VR is definitely enough for most beginners. It's a versatile and good-performing lens.

For product photography, also make sure to read up on proper lighting of the subject, since lighting is extremely important.

Lighting is everything. No camera can save crappy lighting.

The D5100 is debuting at $1,000? Doesn't leave much room between it and the D7000!

I think its more like $800 or there abouts but yes, there is only about a $400 diff between the 5100 and the D7K in the US at least. have not checked Aussie pricing yet.

Well a $400 difference isn't so bad, to be honest. The thing is when you guys said double the price of the D3100, and it currently goes for $600, double that is way into the price range of the D7000 instead.
