How do you guys find the best overclock? 8-24hrs of Prime95 implies OCing takes a really long time for you guys. My previous OC was tested 5hrs Prime95, and I never had any problems.

Here is how I do my overclock.

Set an overclock and run P95 small FFT for 2 hours
if passed then I up frequency and rerun for 2 hours.
if failed up Vcore by a notch and rerun for 2 hours.
Doing that until I reach my desired overclock.

Then I launch a 8h Small FFT run just to be sure the Vcore is correct
If passed I launch a 8h blend
If failed I up Vcore by a notch and rerunn for 8 hours

When stable small FFT I run 8 hours blend to be sure the whole system is stable
If passed I run a 24 hours small FFT
If failed I check memory and uncore (for i7) and tweak by a notch every time

When 8 hours blend stable, I'm almost sure I would be OK,
but I run a 24h small FFT then a 24h blend just to make sure everything is in order.

Remember to always keep a trace of changes you make in your overclock like an excel spreadsheet.

I have heard that occt, intel burn test/linpack/linx, are fast at telling you if your cpu configuration is stable/somewhat stable.

So...

What I would do is use these programs to do a rough check on my stability, if it doesn't pass it most certainly won't pass prime, if it does pass then I use prime for 8 hours or so to test the system more thoroughly.
Thanks, will try intel burn test. Otherwise, this OCing could take weeks.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight into your process. Although, I will be substituting your 2hrs of prime95 w/10 minutes of intel burn test. I guess stability is in the eye of the beholder. 5hrs of Prime95 is what I consider stable. I don't know of any programs that require a full load CPU for 24hrs, let alone 5hrs. Unless you are folding.

Overclocking is like anything else! YOU GET OUT OF IT ,WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT!!! Shortcuts never work for me personally ! But mabey thats why your complaining about a unstable overclock!

It's up to you mate.

If you're going with LinX / IntelburnTest, you want to do 20 passes of linX or intelburn test at MAXIMUM memory.

Thanks for the caps. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to read what you were typing. If you did not know, I'm in the process of overclocking my PC. Obviously, I won't be running my PC with these settings. So, if I test each setting for 168hrs of Prime95, I will get a much better overclock than someone who tested each setting for only 24hrs of Prime95? You get out of it, what you put into it. My overclock will be that much better?

What you call "shortcut", I call efficiency. Like I said, stability is in the eye of the beholder. Stable for my purposes is not stable for someone else.

Protip: There's a secret xtreme mode that will really stress your computer, to the point of freezing it.

Some simple clarification here:

Just because it boots into Windows, it does not mean your overclock is stable.

Most will do an hour or two of Prime95 CPU stress to test, though thorough stability tests are done for between 12 and 48 hours.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem before with my i7-860, it would be stable for 5hours + then as soon as i shut off the PC for more than 8 hours, the next time i turn it on it would be unstable. Then after restarting the computer it would become stable again with the same setting. I think ti is something wrong with the PSU. It has to warm up or something. The some of the testing i done was the following:

1.After a cold shut off (more than 8 hours), i would turn on the computer and immediately run stress test and surely it will fail everytime
2. After a cold shut off, i would turn on the computer for 5-10mins and then restart the computer, then run stress test and it will NEVER fail

This problem was fixed when I changed my antec quattro 850watt to my seasonic m12d 850watt.

Just... up the FSB or Multi, stress test for 5 minutes, up it more, stress test for 5 minutes, up the voltage if unstable, keep your temps and voltage within the right limits and when you reached that limit stress test for 24 hours. You're not supposed to stress test every increase of 10Mhz for 24 hours.

I use 12hours+ on blend to make sure it's stable. If I have time I let it run for 24 hours.
