Very First Gaming Build

Thread Starter

so iv recently come into some money, $1,250 give or take $50 to be exact.
so iv looked around for months and finally have all my parts scoped out on what to buy, but what im afraid of is A) some part not working with another part or B) some part failing and harming another part. I will post all the parts im going to be buying in about 2-3 weeks, please confirm if they will work together and rate how good it will be, also if I could save some money on some parts or some parts are overkill and i dont need please provide what should be changed, I am rather nervous. also I would like to overclock the cpu to 4.0 but i have never even messed with that sort of thing like volts and what not so any tips there would be great.

With that budget you should be able to fit in a card at the level of a GTX 560-570, a 1090T, 8GB of NON-GENERIC performance RAM (~1600Mhz), an SSD, a decent hard drive setup, a very good power supply, very good expandability, overclockability options, and everything else. It's very easy. I make it a habit to include an SSD on all my builds over $800, 8GB of RAM over $900 (depending on need), and serious overclocking options (i.e. more money on cooling) over $1000.

But my advice would be to hold out just a bit longer, at least until more AM3+ socket boards are coming out. One is already out on Newegg but it is a lower end 870 chipset board that might not interest you; more are to come in the next few.

A few to start you with, though these deals may change:
Samsung F3 1TB - faster for significantly cheaper
Better, much cheaper 2x4GB 1600Mhz DDR3 kit
Lancool K62 - I wouldn't take anything higher. Great look, GREAT features for price, cable management, black interior, great airflow/fans included, all for a price tag of just $90 shipped.
You'll also like that mouse if you prefer reliable mice that are really light (i.e. just about no weight), I know I do because I'm using one right now... but that depends on your choice.

I agree with xd_1771. Bulldozer CPUs are planned for release during the second quarter of this year.

But if waiting is not an option then have a look on this built:

The build above is a good start and gives you more things for same price but there are still plenty of things I would change, i.e. Hyper 212+ (ripoff on Newegg), cheaper SSD (anything above 250MB/s read really isn't noticeable much - what matters is that SSD is super fast), better power supply (that one is not very good), CrossfireX expandability (i.e. M4A89GTD PRO/USB3), etc.

Actually I just remembered that high end ASUS boards (M4A89GTD, M4A89TD, Crosshair IV Formula) are claiming experimental AM3+ CPU support. Which means an xd-certified build is now under construction...

Some out of stock items have been recommended - they should be in stock in 2-3 weeks; however if new AM3+ boards are out by then I'll revise this.
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 + ASUS GTX 560 TI - $385, $375 AR
Lancool K62 + Truepower 750 - $175 shipped
1090T + Xigmatek GAIA - $218
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB DDR3-1866 CL9 - $100 after promo [AMD FX series will natively support 1866Mhz and likely run well with it]

- $120 [Amazon]
Samsung F3 1 TB - $60 shipped
Sony 24X DVD - $20 shipped [Mwave]
- $6

Okay I am giving up at this point and going to sleep - it is super late here and I am super tired. This should be enough of a basis to build your rig on.

I decided to get the samsung instead of the WD, but i will stick with the g skills maybe if they were 2000 and not just 1600 it might be worth the extra 20 but not to me, i also downgraded the case to haf 922. I will wait to Q3 for the AMD Quad-core Llano upgrade, and if i need a new motherboard for then so be it, but i cant wait that long

I'm pretty sure that kit could easily OC to 2000Mhz anyway. Certainly a lot better than 1333 generic. Even then, really, the benefit of 2000Mhz (assuming CL9 like most 2x4GB kits) is really really negligible on AMD vs having a lower speed and lowering the timings. Sure, this kit is actually less than 2000 CL9, but it costs the same as all the other 1600 kits thanks to that promo code. I'm not complaining there. With AMD's FX-Series having native 1866Mhz DDR3 support via multi also and the IMC likely working a lot differently (JF-AMD states 50% better), I don't see why not.

By the way AMD Llano is not for us enthusiasts as it's more of a mainstream platform - and it'll use a different socket than AM3 or AM3+. A 4-core or 6-core AMD FX Series (Bulldozer) would be more practical. Get an AM3+ board (or AM3+ ready board).

could I just as easily OC to 4.0 the 955, 3.2 as the 965, 3.4?
