Phenom II X2 555 BE - What % now unlock to 4 cores?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of building an ultra cheap box using a Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition. I'm seeing in the Newegg users reviews, a lot more reports of successful unlocking of the 2 addition cores to a 4 cores in total.

Are the newest 555's more likely to unlock successfully now? Any idea to the percentage of success? I remember their initial success rate was roughly around 50%.

Thanks.

Chances that it will unlock and be stable?

Not very high. At least from what I have seen with others including myself.

Ah, ok thanks. That's too bad.

Chances that it will unlock and be stable are about 80% from what I can tell.

They've perfected the fabrication process the last time I read about it so chances are high.

My system doesn't overclock well but other factors may be affecting it. *I hate my mobo btw*

Anyways.. when you by the Phenom II x2 555. You need to expect that you're getting an x2. The x4 is a gamble and is not solid no matter what chances people tell you.

I got my chip back in September and it does unlock to an x4. Stable up to 3.8 GHz but needs 1.55 volts.

Thanks for the info. Ya, it is a gamble. So I started this thread to see judge if it's a wise gamble or not.

Ya, what is a solid yet inexpensive mobo for the 555? I don't need any mobo frills, just OC'ing stability.

mATX or ATX. My current NZXT Lexa case supports both, I believe.

Get a mobo with more than 4+1 power phases
http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...l#post12462681

The explanation can be read here, it is highly recommended to read it because it involves the higher TDP that is associated with unlocking the x2.
http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/94...hy-choose.html

You will also need a new cpu cooler if you are successful in unlocking and want to overclock the hell out of it. The reason is that the stock cooler is only designed for the x2 which has a lower TDP than the x4.

tl/dr; I would go with the ATX if you have the chance.
