Configuration of Different Pumps

post #1 of 15
Thread Starter
Hi guys,

For two DDC pumps and two D5 pumps (4 pumps in total)
How to combine them in order to get best performance?

I searched and saw many threads that saying D5 and DDC should not be in one loop 'cuz they are two different types of pump. But there's perspective that it doesn't matter if 2 kinds of pump in one loop.
Different people have different opinions so I still have no idea...

However more complicated situation comes to me
Now I have two old DDC pumps (Koolance pmp-400) and two new D5 pumps (Alphacool VPP655)

Which of the following 3 configurations is the best? (pls only consider single loop, ignore multi-loop)

1. Reservoir→D5→D5→Y-Block→DDC→Y-Block→Waterblocks→Rad
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~↘DDC↗~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Reservoir→D5→D5→DDC→DDC→Waterblocks→Rad
3. Reservoir→DDC→DDC→D5→D5→Waterblocks→Rad
Personal reason for #1:
Since DDC has larger head but slower flow rate, I make the DDCs paralleled in order to increase their flow rate.
Similarly, I put two D5s in series in order to increase their maximum head, because D5 is a large flow rate but small maximum head pump.
Personal reason for #2 and #3:
Understandable, one simple loop, all four pumps are in series. Only difference is the positions of DDC and D5.
You may ask why I have 4 pumps in my loop.
I'm sensitive to the noise, so I won't run pumps in max or medium speed. 1, 2 or even 3 pumps at low speed aren't enough for my system.
Wish to collect some advice and suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
I'm curious what's in your loop and your system, I have 2 D5 Vario's and thought they'd handle pretty much anything. I've had a silent system with 2 D5's mounted floating on gelstuff there's no noise at all and I've had to touch the pumps to make sure they're running. If you mount them well enough to eliminate vibrations totally you should be able run them near to full speed and not notice at all.
I do feel noisy when D5 runs at third gear, and when it runs at fifth/full speed, I cannot sleep.
I'm suspecting its how they're mounted. If they transmit any vibration to the case at all its amplified. I got some XSPC D5 Bay pump/res and they're loud even mounted on rubber. To get silence I had the pumps free floating only connected by the tubing and resting on 2 pieces of PetraTek's GelStuff, all I could hear was the PSU fan and I had to change that out for a low noise one.
Do you plan to cool all that stuff with just one radiator??
No matter how big it is. you're not going to get good temps for sure.
You should add more rads to the loop...
This rad is enough..
Having MORE flow will not really cool any better.
There is a balance between the heat dump from the source into your cooling loop. If the coolant is flowing way too fast, the heat dump into the loop will not work efficently. Thus, your temps will rise.
Having a loop that is tuned; the correct amount of flow and the right amount of RADs will in turn remove the heat dump properly.
A flow of over 1.5 gal/min for cooling upwards of 350W of heat may be useless, along with drawing more power from the electric.
I believe two D5 could go to another loop
but if you insist, I'll say #1 is good
I vote for no 1
Are you building a water cooling loop or a fire truck?
I'm pretty sure you have at least 2 more pumps than you will see any tangible cooling benefit from having in the loop.
Beyond a certain point, there are greatly diminishing returns from having more flow. That "certain point" is a little different for every system, but your 4 pump setup would surely be orders of magnitude beyond that "certain point".
