Well I'm pretty sure it's not your video card but what "tests" did you perform on the other hardware to rule them out? Random freezes have a pretty broad range of suspects.

Just noticing the unlocked 6970 bit... Possible driver conflict? Is there any specific time that it does this? When you fire up a game, open a particular browser.. etc?

This happens to me as well.

Last couple of days I had exactly the same problem. Random freezes whilst gaming... keyboard/mouse wouldn't work. I was troubleshooting and the problem seemed to be when I was flashing back and forth (benchmarking) I forgot to +20% power control in amd overdrive once flashed to 6970. This was the last step in the flashing tutorial i ridiculously always forgot. Hasn't happened since anyway. What games are you playing? What temps are you getting? What drivers you using? Id also start using manual fan control when putting gpu under heavy use if you're not already. These cards run quite hot.
