Do you smell console port when you hear Portal 2? - Page 3

I got a wiff of console port when i was seeing all the ads for portal 2.

Perhaps it's the advertising itself that makes us think "console port" - lets be honest, we've not needed ads to know valve make the greatest titles. But the console crowd will.

Needless to say, this doesn't mean Valve can't fail us like Crytek has (or many other devs) So it's best to keep an open mind just in case.

I'm not condemning them, just sayin, it can happen.

Not quite sure why but this kinda thing really gets on my nerves. Valve's great, but they can screw up just like any other developer. Really naive comment.

Valve could easily make the same mistakes other devs have by going multi-platform.

Reason why you can't run it is actually because of the ATI GPU. Not bashing on ATI here....I love ATI (actually thinking about swapping my 470 for a 6970 soon). But that's why SR2 won't play nicely with your system.
Is that it? It seems possible, I got more 60FPS in borderlands with my 8800GT. But with this card it dips from it occasionally.

No idea why it is, but some games really don't like ATI.

Valve has already gone multi-platform... Yes there's a chance Valve could screw up, but I highly doubt it. Look at all Valve has done for the PC community. I don't think they would turn their back on it. The day Valve leaves the PC community is the day PC gaming truly will start dying.

Not quite. There are huge optimizations to the source engine to run properly on consoles. This is one of the many reasons why TF2 cannot be updated (although not the main) simply because the amount of VRAM is already capped out. They really struggled getting TF2 / L4D/2 running on these machines.

Take a look at some of their developer slides from back in 2009. A very in-depth review of what tactics they used to achieve playable framerates on consoles.

http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications.html for those who are interested. Look at the L4D ones.

Regardless of whether or not valve is writing Portal 2 with consoles in mind, it doesn't matter, because the game (and others from them) weren't written FOR PC's. Valve makes quality games, where the objective isn't making bleeding-edge graphics, but rather good games. You can have a good game on a PC and a console at the same time, and not have to sacrifice quality of gameplay. It's just that other game developers don't create games with that in mind, which is the issue.

Yeah, i understand they went multi-platform a while back, my point was though that things can easily change. People put WAYYYY too much faith in Valve.

PC gaming will take a big hit if Valve pulled a Crytek (what i'm calling it from now on) but that just gives other companies a chance to take over. It'll be a dark day, i wouldn't say it would kill the market.

I have to laugh, because what on EARTH makes you so sure they won't? I'm sure many would have said the same about Crytek during Crysis 2's development.

Crytek probably knew exactly were their "Fanbase" was at, but just didn't care. The likely case is that they thought there's more profit from the console market, where fanboys are happy to spend cash on overpriced rubbish.

People are putting way too much faith in Valve. I'm trying to stay rational here, Valve are a company, and like any company they need money to survive, if they think pulling a Crytek (lul) will be more financially viable then i would expect them to do the exact same thing.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Just to be clear; like you i share the same opinion in regards to ports. I don't mind them, so long as i expect them. GTA IV i also loved, and still do, it's a bad port but i expected that and i can tolerate it.

If Portal 2 turns out to be consolized then Valve worked harder than Crytek to make a console port.

Portal 2 should be epic.

Let me put it this way....

If Valve stabs PC Gamers in the back, they will lose a HUGE portion of their fan base, if not the entire fan base. Valve = Steam. They know that PC Gamers love them and will buy from them. They know that because it uses Steam for DRM (very light, easy to use DRM), then it won't get pirated to hell and back like Crysis. They know that they put out solid games, and they know they'll get money from PC Gamers for those games...because we love Valve games.

I'm sorry, but if Valve was to ever pull a Crytek on us, then PC Gaming is DEAD at that point. It won't "be dying"...it'll be flat out dead.

Crytek have made 1 game, and it was ok. Valve have made dozens and most of them are excellent. That's why a lot of people have a lot of faith in valve.
