I see no reason why people shouldn't be able to return software they purchase. I'm sure people have bought software, only to find out it isn't what they thought it was.

Actually yes it is, software is sold as a service. This is because software is virtual, written once and duplicated. It's also why it's copyright infringement when you pirate and not theft.

When you "buy" software you are buying a license to run said software, not the software itself. The software belongs to the manufacturer.

It's the same with music and movies. You didn't make the music or movie, when you buy a dvd or cd you are buying a license to listen or watch that content.
