Need some ideas for a blog/cms

Thread Starter
Hello, I am gonna start working on a blog/cms app. I have built one in the past but let's just say the code is very hard to read. Any suggestions on how to build one that would be reasonably easy to update.

Right now these are the features I know I need...
Admin panel
Some kind of ui
Some blog script
A way to make custom pages

Optional...
Some kind of member integration
forum(possibly just an extension of the blog script)
Some kind of calendar. Maybe it can be filled with events.
A comment script for blog post.
Social integration.
Newsletter

I am thinking of using php for this but I have always wanted to try python. The main purpose of this is just to get back into making web apps. I just looked at craigslist and people with this skills are in high demand in my area. Most are small companies looking for something like a cms site that is not hard to use. I know there are lots of os options for me to play with but I would prefer to start from scratch.

Do you think CSS templates are better than absolute templates? I am really no good and making sites look pretty, I just know how to code them somewhat. I think once I get a functioning prototype I could venture out and find some artist to help out.

Thanks for the input.

Let me be the first to recommend that you don't try to reinvent the wheel. WordPress does everything you want, and it's easy to inspect the code and learn your way around how a CMS is put together.

I would highly suggest making yourself a simple wordpress site that does all of that for you, Thats mostly what I use when making customer sites.

I'm guessing no one read OP's post? He said he knows other options are available, but he'd prefer to start from scratch? That makes sense, especially if he's trying to learn. What can you possibly learn from Wordpress when it's functions do everything for you?

you didnt read Error's post, why try to re-event the wheel?? Also what he can learn from something like wordpress is what to do and how to write better code.

EDIT:
and you cant tell me someone is so perfect that they cant work on their coding skills

Ah, considering I maintain a WordPress site, I think I know what WordPress is capable of. If anything, it takes you by the hand and does everything for you with the built-in functions. Also, for me to have responded to their posts, I'd have had to read them. The problem lies with them not having read his post clearly.

What you may not have understood was my point: he/she said they just wanted to jump back into making web apps. What the hell does WordPress have to do with making web apps? Nowhere was it specified that OP wanted to run his own site/blog.

Once again, what do built-in WordPress functions have anything to do with coding skills?
