[Ars] Oops: major Canadian ISP admits throttling World of Warcraft

Quote:
Back in February, a Canadian gamer wrote the government's telecom regulator with an unusual complaint: her ISP, Rogers, was allegedly throttling games like World of Warcraft, making the mile all but unplayable. Even more unusually, the government demanded that Rogers look into the accusation, and the ISP has now admitted that it is, in fact, throttling WoW in some cases. But only by accident.
Source

I am so glad I'm not stuck with Rogers.

I have a question though, would file hosting services like services be recognized as P2P traffic? Considering its a direct download. I always wondered if they would be affected by throttling.

I can attest to the fact that WoW, at least, uses almost negligible bandwidth.
I would have liked to see the chaos that would ensue if the throttling was perhaps prevalent for a service such as Netflix. If WoW was unplayable using it's less than 50kbps, imagine how 1080p video streaming would fare.

In the BF3 thread someone said it needs about 10KB/s.

I am too. Things would be different however, if more or any of the money paid to the companies went to building faster/cheaper services...

Standard MMO is around 5-8 kb/sec down, 1.5 kb/sec up in high traffic areas of the game, in an area with few players or NPCs it is much lower on average.

Why they would throttle this, I do no know.
