New Job and its complications

Thread Starter
Guys, I have just recently started a job as a tech at a local business where I live.

I almost had a heart attack on the day they told me I was hired. Its what I've been doing since I was 8, so I figured I would be just fine. Never had a major issue with a computer I haven't been able to fix. So I thought I would have been able to breeze through it.

I thought this was a god-sent. Been working at McDs all of my life, so its a very VERY nice upgrade in terms of jobs. That and just within the last year started living on my own with my fiance. And she also recently got fired from her job, so its even more of one of those, thank god I got this.

But now it seems that I am in over my head. I thought I could do it, but its not as easy as I thought it would be. Does anyone out there have any suggestions to keep my job here, or anything that I can do personally here to make this thing work.

Also, figured this would be the best section to post this in. If there is another one better, feel free to move it.

Honestly, its taking too much time to finish a certain task. That and also phone calls and dealing with customers. Customers I thought I would have been the best at, since I've done drive-thru for 3+ years.

Virus/spyware removal now has almost become a routine. For the most part, its no problem. But ran into issues like causing XP to not start, etc etc. I try too long to 'fix' Windows and then get yelled at because of it. Things like that.

Also, just got off of the phone with a customer, said she had bought a game and it won't read on her drive. I worked on the machine, knew she played MahJong's all the time, and figured she picked it up. Also knew that she only had a CD read/write drive, so preceded to ask her what type of disc it was. She said most likely a DVD. So suggested she get a CD version of it. Got yelled at for that. Moreover, suggested she pick up a DVD read/write drive, and we can install it, and got yelled at for that. I know I told her that we have some here that we could install for her. Didn't give her a price though which I know now should have.

I dunno, I just think I'm saying the right things, and then according to everyone around me, I'm not.

You're supposed to be overwhelmed to your work when you first start it

That's how 'jobs' are. Heck, I worked in Manufacturing for a year making Door Frames, our line ran about 1800 door frames a day, I slowed the whole line down since I was new

Then you get used to it, quicker, more efficient and all that good stuff and then it's a piece of cake

You'll learn a lot -- Keep your job and don't quit since your foots in the door. You can only go up from here

Thank you for that reassurance. I just hope I can keep that foot in the door while crap pounds my foot to get it out.

The owner threatened to potentially fire me today. Which scares me. Especially since I quit McDs about two weeks ago. And I try my damned hardest. Just wish I knew something to make it easier.

Computer Repair jobs are hell to work at. If it's not the constant phone calls, it's someone complaining that you didn't do a good enough job and they want their money back or the parts are taking too long to arrive for a repair. I've been working at a computer repair shop for nearly a year and it hasn't improved. An IT job at a company would be nice, mainly because I'm dealing with one configuration of everything. Hang in there, but I wouldn't hold out hope that it will get better. As people say, "That's the nature of the job." Sorry for being such a downer though.

EDIT: It's more of what the customer demands than what you know. Most small businesses like that don't want bad publicity and will do anything to satisfy their customer's. As a result, sometimes they make you do things that you don't know how to do, because you're the only one available to do it. The three words that I hate to hear that I am told constantly at my job are "Just do it".

Honestly, the customers thus far have been great. Just the boss, the owner of the place has been giving me the most hell. And the other tech I work with hasn't been much better.

Also, hell yeah for North Dakota. Used to live in southern South Dakota. Vermillion if you know where its at. Also have an aunt up in Rutland, ND if you know where thats at.

Just don't let your boss get to you mentally. Just remind yourself what his role is to you and that if you're doing your best then that's all that matters. He might be just a jerk or maybe it's the nature of his job. Either way don't let him mentally interfere with you.

I think the issue is he hired me on thinking I could do on-site work. And I think its becoming apparent that I'm not prepared for it. Such as server administration, networking etc. If its anything to do with a normal workstation OS I would think I'm good to go. Even making sure printers work. Setting up machines, etc. I even suggested to him that I could come with him on some on-site work, but hasn't brought it up since.

Honestly, the best way to go about it is to build a routine to work with. I've been a tech at CompUSA, a university, and at various businesses. You must develop a way to easily diagnose machines and deal with customers. Just be thorough with your work.

Are you certified in any respect? What would make your boss think you were viable for field work?
